“MY GLOBALIZATION STORY”

Globalization may be defined in various ways depending on the circumstances,

and it includes and is not limited to political, cultural, educational, economic, and perhaps

religious views. From the songs we hear on the radio, the most popular movies and

novels, fashion, technology, and emigration from one country to another—all have to do

with Globalization and the spread of influences throughout the world. Globalization has

taught me many things and has changed many aspects of my life as an individual. For the

last period, numerous publications and conversations have focused on Globalization, a

rising development that may be considered a movement toward a more interconnected

and interdependent international economy.

The Internet undoubtedly contributes significantly to Globalization and is

regarded as the most significant technical breakthrough. My family has utilized the

Internet in nearly every aspect of our lives. In my family's case, my dad is an Overseas

Filipino worker. With the help of technological developments such as Facebook,

Messenger, and many more, we can connect and communicate in an efficient, affordable,

and convenient manner, allowing us to stay in daily contact even though he is not

physically present. The distance is no longer measured as we can feel that they are just

near us even though it is miles away from us in reality. But when we are complete, one of

our favorite bonding as a family is eating at different fast-food chains like McDonald’s,

Jollibee, Chowking and many more. Globalization has also brought us a fundamental

shift in our family life and living arrangements. Globalization has altered our family life

through the need to engage in decision-making under uncertain conditions like the
postponement of family-related decisions, abstinence during important events or holidays

for the whole family, or continue living our daily lives without our king (my dad).

The Internet has taught me that life has become easier as we order foods from

both local and international companies, communicate with our friends or relatives, share,

exchange photos, and even go shopping online from locals or overseas. In my leisure

time, I spend my time scrolling on social media like TikTok, where I can see various

content worldwide like news, entertainment, educational purposes, and many more. I also

binge-watched K-Dramas, series, and movies on Netflix and Viu. The Internet has also

clearly impacted my education, providing me with vast information. It has gained me

new knowledge, developed new ways of thinking and learning, and served as my

educational tool, especially in my online class. It allows me to attend courses quickly, do

my assignments, and easily access vast information on any subject. It also harms my

online education because we tend to procrastinate due to the readily available resources.

Our eagerness to learn something declines, and we are prone to false and invalid

information. Because of this pandemic, professors cannot provide us with face-to-face

education. We also miss out on the opportunity to connect with my classmates because

some of them have difficulty communicating online. But for most people, it is impossible

to picture living without the Internet, especially students like me. Globalization has been

with me from the computer or laptop I do my homework on to the phone I use and the

tablet; these were globally outsourced, contributing to my definition of Globalization as a

student.

From what I've learned, Globalization has defined as the process or processes that

increase the movement of people, culture, technology, ideologies, and information across
the world. One fun fact about me is that I have been wanting to go and live in Canada

someday, if God permits. I have been an avid fan of BTS and Korean Dramas way back

in 2012. The Kpop and Kdrama industry has significantly impacted people worldwide,

including me. My sister and I used to watch more than twenty kdramas as our way to

bond and destress from academic stress. Up to the present, it's still gained a significant

impact on our lives. We learned many things about their language, culture, foods,

fashion, and music. I've always been open to other trends and cultures. I also used to

watch Thai and Turkish series, which made me learn how diverse the language and

culture are in the different parts of the world. As witnessed in Korean dramas, Korean

culture and trends have infiltrated and become firmly established in Philippine society

today. Korean dramas significantly impact my food, fashion, music, cosmetics, and

attitudes and tastes. The samgyupsal, kimchi, and soju do not forget their fashion sense

and love for music. We Filipinos tend to learn some essential words from the Hangul

language as derived from watching all those kdramas series. On the positive side of

cultural globalization, more people create friendship groups based on shared interests

online. Cross-culture globalization has also made a negative impact on me as a Filipino. I

was too overwhelmed by how they set Korean dramas to show their contemporary

historical settings. I wondered why Filipinos don't do the same thing to emphasize our

own culture in movies. By listening to BTS and Blackpink's songs, it came to my mind

that we lack patronization and importance of our good music like Ppop. Thus, it made me

like their culture more than our own culture. But that doesn't mean Globalization has

made me forget my culture but has made me realize to love more and give importance to

our own. Korean culture has not dominated the original culture of the Filipinos; instead,
Filipino culture was developed and strengthened in other elements of the Filipino way of

life through the significant impact or influence brought by the Korean wave because they

adopted Korean culture. Not only was the result provided, but also a strong link of peace

between the two nations. Filipinos thought that the Korean wave helped remind Filipino

youngsters of their ideals and likings. Kdrama doesn't only have positive impacts but also

adverse effects on us, most especially the teenagers. We should set boundaries and

limitations from watching kdramas and idolizing our idols or favorite groups.

To summarize, globalization is presently a very apparent phenomenon and

steadily expanding. It is characterized by a growth in global engagement that includes the

exchange of ideas, cultures, goods, services, and investments. Globalization promotes

economic growth where it has been an engine of economic development by way of the

improved living conditions in almost all countries as globalization has progressed. On the

other hand, the advanced countries have made the most progress with only a few poor

countries making significant gains. Globalization is an opportunity and a blessing

because it has brought a lot of social and economic benefits to me. However, it may also

indicate a downside if much is taken into consideration but most probably, it is beneficial

for me. It is now up to us how we will take positively globalization to the good side

rather than the opposite because globalization will continue to exist in the coming years.
