Q.1) Design for Visakhapatnam a self-supporting stack of height 80m above the
foundation. The diameter of the cylindrical portion of chimney is 3.5m. Thickness of fire
brickwork lining is 100mm. And the lining is supported by the stack throughout the height.
The topography at the site is almost flat and the location is of terrain category – II.
Wind Force
Design Factors:
Terrain & Height Factor k2 is dependent on height (IS:875-pt.3, Sec 5.3.2.2, Table-2)
pZ = 0.6 (VZ)2 = 0.6× (45.50 k2)2 = 1242.15 k22 N/m2 (IS:875-pt.3, Sec 5.4)
The values of k2 are determined for mid-section level and force on the sections are
tabulated below:

Design of chimney:
The minimum thickness of the chimney required is 6mm or D/500, i.e., 7mm. SO the effective
thickness of chimney is 7mm.
Considering External & internal corrosion Limits the thickness of the chimney required is
11mm.
The stresses in the the sections of chimney for self weight, lining weight and wind forces are
tabulated. If the Fcmax and Ftmax are not within the permissible limtis as per Table 3 of IS
6533 Part II: 1989, the thickness for that section is increased by 2mm.
