Introductory Message

1
Welcome to Mathematics for Grade 7!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Schools
Division of Cadiz City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the
Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the
learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to guide

the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized
resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring lifelong learning
skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning activities
specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to
face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging
activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the
instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to
your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Finding the Solution of Linear Equation or Inequality in One Variable

I. Learning Competency with Code

Finds the solution of linear equation or inequality in one variable (M7AL-IIi-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

Linear equations in one variable may have a unique solution, but linear
inequalities in one variable may have infinite solutions. The following examples further
illustrate this idea.

Example 1. Given 𝑥 + 5 = 13, prove that only one of element of the replacement set
{– 8, – 3, 5, 8, 11} satisfies the equation.

Substitute the elements of the replacement set for 𝑥 in 𝑥 + 5 = 13 then simplify.

For 𝑥 = −8: For 𝑥 = −3: For 𝑥 = 5: For 𝑥 = 8: For 𝑥 = 11:
−8 + 5 = −3 −3 + 5 = 2 5 + 5 = 10 8 + 5 = 13 11 + 5 = 16
−3 ≠ 13 2 ≠ 13 10 ≠ 13 13 = 13 16 ≠ 13
Therefore −8 is Therefore -3 is Therefore 5 is Therefore 8 is Therefore 11 is
not a solution. not a solution. not a solution. a solution. not a solution.

Based on the evaluation, only 𝑥 = 8 satisfied the equation while the rest did not. Therefore,
we proved that only one element in the replacement set satisfies the equation.

Example 1.1. Given y + 8 = 24, prove that only one of element of the replacement set
{–5, 5, 0, 10, 16} satisfies the equation.

Substitute the elements of the replacement set for y in y + 8 = 24 then simplify.

For y = −5: For 𝑥 = 5: For 𝑥 = 0: For 𝑥 = 10: For 𝑥 = 16:
−5 + 8 = 3 5 + 8 = 13 0 + 8 =8 10 + 8 = 18 16 + 8 = 24
3 ≠ 24 13≠ 32 8 ≠ 32 18 ≠ 32 24= 24
Therefore -5 is Therefore 5 is Therefore 0 is Therefore 10 is Therefore 24
not a solution. not a solution. not a solution. not a solution. is a solution.

Based on the evaluation, only y = 24 satisfied the equation while the rest did not. Therefore,
we proved that only one element in the replacement set satisfies the equation.

3
Example 2. Given 𝑥– 3 ≤ 5, determine the element/s of the replacement set
{– 8, – 3, 5, 8, 11} that satisfy the inequality.

Substitute each element of the replacement set for in 𝑥– 3 ≤ 5 then simplify.

For 𝑥 = −8: For 𝑥 = −3 For 𝑥 = 5: For x = 8: For 𝑥 = 11:
- –3≤5 -3 3 ≤ 5 3≤5 3≤5
-11 ≤ 5 True −6 ≤ 5 True 2 ≤ 5 True 8 ≤ 5 False
Therefore −𝟖 Therefore −𝟑 Therefore 5 is 5 ≤ 5 True Therefore 11 is
is a solution. is a solution. a solution. Therefore 8 is not a solution.
a solution.

Based on the evaluation, the inequality was not satisfied when 𝒙 = 11. While the values
– 8, – 3, 5, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 8 satisfy the inequality. Therefore, these 4 elements in the replacement
set are the solutions to the inequality.

Example 2.2: Given b– 5 > −7, determine the element/s of the replacement set
{–2, 4, 0, 8, 10} that satisfy the inequality.

Substitute each element of the replacement set for b in b– 5 > −7then simplify.
For 𝑥 = −2: For 𝑥 = 4 For 𝑥 = 0: For x = 8: For 𝑥 = 10:
-2 - 5 > −7 4– 5 > −7 0– 5 > −7 8 -5 > −7 10 -5 > −7
-7 > −7 False −1 > −7True -5 > −7 True 3 > −7 True 5 > −7 True.
Therefore −2 is Therefore −4 Therefore 5 is Therefore 8 is Therefore 10
not a solution. is a solution. a solution. a solution. is a solution.

Based on the evaluation, the inequality was not satisfied when 𝒙 = -2. While the values
– 4, 0, 8, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 10 satisfy the inequality. Therefore, these 4 elements in the replacement set
are the solutions to the inequality.
