Learning Tasks 2
Direction: Read and analyze. Then follow the instructions below in doing this activity.
• How would you classify this kind of sampling? 1. Quota sampling? 2. Snowball
sampling? 3. Random purposive sampling? Explain your answer. (3-5 sentences)

1. Quota sampling is a type of non-probability sampling method. This means that elements
from the population are chosen on a non-random basis and all members of the population do
not have an equal chance of being selected to be a part of the sample group. the researcher is
attempting to gather data from a certain number of participants that meet certain
characteristics that may include things such as age, sex, class, marital status, HIV status, etc.
2. Snowball sampling is where research participants recruit other participants for a test or
study. It is used where potential participants are hard to find. It’s called snowball sampling
because (in theory) once you have the ball rolling, it picks up more “snow” along the way and
becomes larger and larger. Snowball sampling is a non-probability sampling method. It doesn’t
have the probability involved, with say, simple random sampling (where the odds are the same
for any particular participant being chosen). Rather, the researchers used their own judgment
to choose participants.
3. Random purposive sampling is the most common sampling strategy. In this type of sampling,
participants are selected or sought based on pre-selected criteria based on the research
question. The process of identifying a population of interest and developing a systematic way of
selecting cases that is not based on advanced knowledge of how the outcomes would appear.
The purpose is to increase credibility not to foster representativeness.
Learning Task 3

1. What is the significance of sampling in qualitative research?

2. Why do you think purposive sampling is commonly used in qualitative
research?
3. Which qualitative research design is most appealing to you? Why?

ANSWER:

1. Qualitative researchers typically make sampling choices that enable them to achieve a deep
understanding of the phenomenon they are studying. In this section, we’ll examine the
techniques that qualitative researchers typically employ when sampling as well as the various
types of samples that qualitative researchers are most likely to use in their work.

2. Purposeful sampling is widely used in qualitative research for the identification and selection
of information-rich cases related to the phenomenon of interest. Although there are several
different purposeful sampling strategies, criterion sampling appears to be used most commonly
in implementation research.
3. The qualitative research design that is most appealing to me is the case study. Because this
research design provides real life understanding about the issue of my research topic.
