I. Introductory Concept
This Learning Activity Sheet aims to discuss the different methods and materials in painting and
sculpture that learners can apply to produce an artwork out of their own creative imagination;
and to identify the components of an art critique that learners can utilize in evaluating various
artworks. This aims to impart to learners the practical knowledge and skills in painting and
sculpture in producing artwork creatively. This paper will also guide learners to incorporate the
components of an art critique to their own pieces of contemporary work of art.

As a Senior High School learner, part of your task is applies artistic skills and techniques and
performance practices arts from different regions in the Philippines and its significance.
Critiques available materials and appropriate techniques and Incorporates contemporary
characteristics to one’s creation with attention to detail.

An art critique is a detailed analysis and evaluation of a work of art. Different people may have different
interpretations of a single artwork and they may have varying reactions to it but to achieve a more
detailed, thoughtful critique, a few basic guidelines could be used. These guidelines are the components

of (or the stages in writing) an art critique. These components are description, analysis, interpretation
and judgment.

Components of an Art Critique

1. Description: the visual facts An art critique can be written by first providing some basic
information about the artwork like the title of the work, artist’s name, when the piece was
created, where it was made, the types of media used to create the work (e.g., oil paint on
canvas), and the exact size of the work.
2. Analysis: the use of design principles Discuss how the artwork uses the principles of design. In
this step consider the most significant art principles (discussed in the previous modules) that are
used in the artwork. Describe how the artist used them to organize the elements: Balance,
Contrast, Movement, Proportion, etc.
3. Interpretation: the meaning of the artwork An interpretation seeks to explain the meaning of
the work based on what you have learned so far about the piece. What do you think is the
message behind this artwork? What do you think the artist is trying to convey?
4. Judgment: personal evaluation This is your personal evaluation based on your understanding of
the artwork.
• Decide whether you think the work is successful or not.
• Explain how you are judging the work.
• Summarize why you think it is successful or unsuccessful.

ART PRODUCTION: PAINTING AND SCULPTURE

Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions. The common materials used
in sculpture are terracotta clay, bronze, metals, wood, stone, resin, or recycled materials. The sculpting
process can either be subtractive (where the material is removed or carved out until the desired form is
visible) or additive.

Techniques or Processes in Sculpting:

1. Modelling is an additive sculpting process. Clay and wax are the most common modeling
materials, and the artist’s hands are the main tools, though metal and wood implements are

 often employed in shaping. Unlike carving, corrections are possible during modeling, and the
result—fired clay or preserved wax—is not as permanent as a stone or wood carving.
2. Carving is a method of making a sculpture using a solid block of material, like wood or stone. The
artist removes areas to create the desired shape, cutting away the excess material from the
solid mass. Carvers use tools like chisels, which have straight cutting blades, and gouges, which
have convex cutting blades. Carving is considered a subtractive process because the excess
material is removed in the process of creating a finished work.
3. Assembling or Assemblage is a form of sculpture comprised of "found" objects arranged in such
a way that they create a piece. These objects can be anything organic or man-made.

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the
"matrix" or "support"). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other
implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used.

Techniques in Painting:

1. Wet-on-wet, or alla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt), direct painting or au premier coup,
is a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers
of wet paint. Used mostly in oil painting, the technique requires a fast way of working, because
the work has to be finished before the first layers have dried.
2. Grisaille and Glazing. Although the definition of a grisaille is a fully realized (detailed) under
painting done in grays, the term is often applied to under paintings in raw umber and other
neutral tones as well. Grisaille is a technique of monochrome painting in two or three shades of
gray. More specifically, it is the method of painting in full modeling in black and white or other
simple contrasting tones, and applying transparent color over this in thin layers or glazes.
