II. GLOBAL and NATIONAL INITIATIVES FOR SUSTAINABILITY
➢ Mainstreaming 1.5 degrees Celsius – The inclusion of 1.5 degrees Celsius as an aspirational limiting
global warming was a big victory for the vulnerable island nations and leading environmental
NGO's. 1.5 degree Celsius had previously been dismissed by major powers but increased reporting
on the difference half a degree would make to millions of lives helped to ensure this aspirational
target was included.
➢ It aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global
temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to
pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
➢ It aims to increase the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change, and at
making finance flows consistent with low GHG emissions and climate-resilient pathway.
Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Scope and Purpose: Focuses on the adoption of measures that address the three dimensions of
Reduction (2015-2030) disaster risk (exposure to hazards, vulnerability and capacity, and hazard characteristics) in order
to prevent the creation of new risk, reduce existing risk, and increase resilience.
GEC 21.1 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACTIVITY WORKSHEET 2ND SEM2021-2022
Expected Outcome: The substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods, and health
and in the economic, physical, social, cultural, and environmental assets of persons, businesses,
communities, and countries.
Goal: Prevent new and reduce existing disaster risks through the implementation of integrated and
inclusive economic, structural, legal, social, health, cultural, educational, environmental, technological,
political, and institutional measures that prevent and reduce hazard exposure and vulnerability to disaster,
increase preparedness for response and recovery, and thus strengthen resilience
Targets: Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 outlines seven clear targets.
Priorities for Action:
➢ Understanding disaster risk.
➢ Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk.
➢ Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience.
➢ Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to "Build Back Better" in recovery,
rehabilitation and reconstruction.
NATIONAL
National Climate Change Action Aims: prioritizes food security, water sufficiency, ecological and environmental stability, human security,
Plan (NCCAP) climate-smart industries and services, sustainable energy, and knowledge and capacity development as the
strategic direction for 2011 to 2028.
Composition of National Framework Strategy on Climate Change: The State adopts the following
Guiding Principles in formulating the National Framework Strategy on Climate Change, referred to as the
Framework: The Framework envisions a climate risk-resilient Philippines with healthy, safe, prosperous and
self-reliant communities, and thriving and productive ecosystems.
Approach Definition
1. Preservative Approach Lands and their natural resources are not consumed by humans and instead are maintained in their pristine
form.
2. Conservative Approach The environment and its resources should be used by humans and managed in a
responsible manner.
3. Ad- hoc Approach It is developed in reaction to a specific situation.
4. Problem-Solving For identification of problems and needs and implement solutions.
Approach
5. Systems Approach Such as ecosystem, agro-ecosystem, etc. Regional approach: based on ecological zones such as watershed, river
basin, coastal zone, command area development, island, etc.
6. Specialist Disciple Often adopted by professionals for air, water and land management, urban management, tourism management,
Approach and environmental health.
Example: Non – compliance of households on proper solid waste segregation
7. Voluntary Sector It is encouraged and supported by NGOs.
Approach
8. Commercial Approach It is for environmental management by business.
Example: A coal fired power plant that emits large volume of CO2 and other toxic pollutants near a coastal
area.
9. Human ecology It is for study of relations between humans or society and nature.
approach Example: Endangered marine fish species and Overharvesting of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna
10. Political Ecology A field within environmental studies focusing on power relations as well as the coproduction of nature and
Approach society. Theoretical inspirations are taken from different sources such as political economy, post structuralism, and
peasant studies to develop policies and laws.
