Using the Alphabet Ball Strategy
by Ruffanie C. Requillo

DEFINITION

Alphabet Ball is a super simple active game that will keep your energetic pre-
schooler moving, grooving and learning. This ball-themed alphabet activity is a
fun way to practice identifying letter sounds while throwing/passing the ball.
Kids will love the chance to move and learn!

OBJECTIVES

While playing Alphabet Ball children will:

a. identify letters by name;

b. identify letter sounds and;
c. develop gross motor skills balance and coordination while
throwing/passing the ball.

VENUE

Outside the classroom, school grounds, in a gym

TIMEFRAME

5 minutes on a daily basis

PARTICIPANTS

Parents or teachers, learners

MECHANICS/PROCEDURES:

1. The parent/teacher calls out a letter and the child responds with a word
that begins with that letter.
2. The parent/teacher throws the ball to the child and the child gives the
adult a letter to find a word for, on and on.

Note: The parent/teacher can make the game more fun by kicking the ball or
chasing each other to tag with the ball. They can also play rhyming ball, where
the thrower provides a word for the catcher to rhyme with.

**demonstration**

Teacher: Good morning, class.

Students: Good morning, ma’am!

Teacher: How are you today?

Students: Good. *doing the thumbs-up gesture*

Teacher: That’s good to hear. Do you want to play a game?

Students: Yes!!!

Teacher: Who wants to play? *raising right hand*

Students: *students excitedly raise their right hands*

Teacher: Okay. So, first, let’s make a big circle. *students will follow
accordingly*

Teacher: Then, here, I have a ball. I will say a letter, for example, the letter
“C.” Next, I will throw the ball to one of you. The one who catches the ball must
respond a word that starts with letter “C.” Do you understand?

Students: Yes, ma’am!

Teacher: Very good. Let’s try… C! *teacher throws the ball to a student*

Student: *student catches the ball* Cat!

Teacher: Good job! Now, before throwing back the ball to me, you must also
say a letter and I will give you a word that starts with that letter. Do you
understand?

Student: Yes, ma’am. Hmm… M! *student throws back the ball to the teacher*

Teacher: *teacher catches the ball* Mango!

(And the game goes on and on…)
