LESSON 5: CELL CYCLE

WHAT’S NEW
DIRECTION: label the diagram below with the following labels:

 Anaphase
 Cell division( M Phase)
 Cytokinesis
 G1 –cell grows
 G2 prepare for mitosis
 S –DNA replication
 Metaphase
 Prophase
 Telophase
 Interphase
 Mitosis

THE CELL CYCLE COLORING WORKSHEET

WHATS MORE
DIRECTION: complete the chart by noting what occurs in each phase of the cell cycle.

GAP 0 (GO)  Period in cell cycle in which exist on in a quiescent

state

GAP 1 (G1)  Cells increases in size, produce RNA and synthesize

INTERPHASE protein

S PHASE  The phase of the cycle in which in which the DNA is

replicated

GAP 2(G2)  Growth and preparation for mitosis

PROPHASE  During which the chromosomes condense and

become visible, the nuclear membrane breaks down,
and the spindle apparatus forms at opposite poles of
the cell.

METAPHASE  The mitotic spindle is fully developed, centrosomes are

MITOSIS OR
at opposite poles of the cell and the chromosomes are
lined up at metaphase plate.
M PHASE
ANAPHASE  The separated chromosomes are then pulled by the
spindle to opposite poles of the cell.

TELOPHASE  The chromosomes continue to move until they are

completely separated and two sets of nuclei formed

 The physical process of cell division

WHAT I CAN DO
1. Define cancer
 A term of diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can be invade
nearby tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to the other parts of the body through the
blood and lymph system

2. What are the causes of cancer

 Cancer is caused by changes (mutations) to the DNA within cell. Mutations in genes can
cause cancer by accelerating cell division rates or inhibiting normal controls on the
system, such as cell cycle arrest or programmed cell death. As a mass of cancerous cells
grows, it can develop into a tumor. Cancer cells can also invade neighboring tissues and
sometimes even break off and travel to other parts of the body, leading to the formation
of new tumors at those sites.
