Introduction:

This lab aims to find out the force acting between Anti-parallel current with the help of
Sargent Welch model to study the current balance. The value of Mu_0/2pi is about to be
determined with the help of current balance apparatus and the results are tested for error
propagation. The experimental value of Mu_0/2pi was calculated as 2.6E-08 N and when
compared with theoretical value, the difference was 1.7E-07 N with propagated error in
discrepancy of 2.5E-09 respectively.

Calculations:

The weight versus current squared graph yields a best fit line of Y = 1E-06x+0.0001 such
that the 1E-06 represents the slope of the graph and 0.0001 represents the x-intercept which
almost comes near to zero.

Y =1E-06 x +0.0001

The exact slope value is given by 1.17494E-06. This value needs to be substituted in tbhe
following equation to get the value of Mu_0/2pi .

In the above equation, the value of 'd' needs to be calculated whose equation is given by,

If the rods are aligned North to south direction, the direction of force on upper rod due to
the vertical components of earth's magnetic field was actually south. The horizontal component
in contrast compensates this force. The Y-intercept value gained from the plot of weight versus
current square was about 0.0001 which is almost near to zero. This value is very close to the
actual propagated error in the intercept. In general, the major objective of measuring the value of
Mu_0/2pi in both theory and practice was successful. The measured value of Mu_0/2pi is about
2.6E-08 N/A^2 with an propagated uncertainty of ± 2.54E-09 N/A^2 . The discrepancy found
between actual and measured value was 1.7E-07 N/A^2 with sigma d value of 2.5E-09 N/A^2 .
The common type of errors identified in the test were both systematic errors and random errors.
Parallax error was also identified such that it occurred during distance measurements which were
not significant. Random error propagated during measurements done with calipers and are
intrinsic in nature.

Conclusion:

This lab has successfully measured the force acting between Anti-parallel current with
the help of Sargent Welch model. However, this experiment is not a success since the value of
discrepancy is found larger than the propagated error in discrepancy. The experimental value of
Mu_0/2pi was calculated as 2.6E-08 N/A^2 having an uncertainty of 2.54E-09 N/A^2.
