Only now are we beginning to realize the heavy price we have to pay for the material progress
that we have achieved because of the advances of technology. Only now it is starting to dawn on
us that the problems caused by rapid industrialization may negate whatever benefits we can derive
from it.
Pollution, one of the modern-day problems that surfaced as a result of technological advances
and rapid population growth, poses a threat not only to our environment but also to life itself. Air
pollution, for example, which is caused mainly by the smoke from factories and exhaust from
vehicles, is a health hazard even as it dirties the environment. Water pollution, on the other hand,
which is caused by the dumping of industrial waste into waterways, has resulted in the death of
marine life and the transformation of our rivers into stinking canals.
The continuous depletion of our natural resources to provide raw materials for our industries
has resulted not only in the dwindling of our reserves but even worse in the upsetting of the balance
of nature which could ultimately spell the extinction of life itself. We are milking nature dry of the
bounties she has to offer and are doing it a rapid pace that unless we call it a halt, we may
proverbially kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

2. Guided Writing: Write a short paragraph (approximately 100 words) by completing the
initial idea below:

Learning Ausubel’s Meaningful Verbal Theory made me learn the importance of using an
advance organizer in teaching and learning. Presenting an advanced organizer before the
discussion of the topic will help in determining the previous knowledge of the students. What the
students know and how much they know about the topic. When students see an advance organizer,
it will give them an idea on what the lesson is all about, what are the related topics that falls under
it. Thus, they can relate their previous knowledge about it or make research about it so that they
can be familiar with the topic. Teaching and learning will be easy because if the lesson is highly
organized through an advance organizer, it means that the ideas are broken down from bigger ideas
to small ones. Being able to see the big picture and going in to the details will help students have
a better understanding of what the lesson is all about. Additionally, the advance organizer only
highlight the important key ideas of the lesson, providing a visual representation of the whole
lesson will help students easily remember the important information of the lesson.
