EFFECTS OF SUN’S HEAT AND LIGHT

Background Information for Learners

Plants, animals and humans can survive because of the sun’s heat that
warms the earth.
Plants can make their own food through the presence of sunlight in
the photosynthetic process.
Effects of the Sun to Human Activities
1. Housewives can dry their laundry during sunny days.
2. Recreational activities are done by families and friends too on a
sunny day.
3. Fishermen can dry their “catch” immediately to preserve them.
4. Farmers dry their crops on hot days.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun has always played
important roles in our environment and affects nearly all living
organisms, which include plants, animals, and human beings.
Beneficial Effects of Ultra Violet (UV) Rays

1. Helps some skin conditions - UV is used in the light treatment of

skin conditions such as psoriasis. This is a condition where the
skin sheds its cells too quickly develops itchy and scaly patches.
Exposure to UV slows the growth of skin cells and relieves the
symptoms.
2. Helps moods - Research suggests that sunlight stimulates the
pineal gland in the brain to produce certain chemicals called
“tryptamines”. These chemicals improve our mood.
3. Helps some animals’ vision - Some animals (including birds,
bees and reptiles) are able to see into the near UV light to locate
many ripe fruits, flowers and seeds that stand out more strongly
from the back ground.
4. Aids some insects’ navigation - Many insects use UV emissions
from celestial objects as references for navigating in flight. This
is why a light sometimes attracts flying insects by disrupting
their navigation process.
5. Useful for disinfection and sterilization - UV can effectively
“kill or deactivate microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria.

The sun’s heat and light can be harmful in some ways.

Harmful Effects of Ultra Violet (UV) Rays

1. Too much exposure to sunlight can cause sunburn and skin cancer.
Sunburn occurs when skin cells damaged.
Skin cancer is caused by UV radiation which is an environmental human
carcinogen.

Kinds of Skin Cancer

a. Basal carcinoma
b. Squamous cell carcinoma
c. Melanoma

2. Looking at the sun directly can cause visual impairment.

3. Too much heat from the sun can cause heart stroke and loos of
water from bodies of humans which may cause stomach cramps.
4. Plants when exposed to intense sunlight may wilt and soon die.
5. Working animals like carabaos when exposed to too much heat
will get sick too like humans.
6. Too much sunlight can make the soil very dry, hard and cracked.
7. Long sunny days can cause drought resulting to stunted growth of
plants and scarcity of water.

Other Harmful Effects of Ultra Violet (UV) Rays

1. Damages immune system - over exposure to UV radiation can

harm the immune system. Scientists believe that sunburn can
change the distribution and function of disease-fighting white
blood cells in humans for up to 24 hours after exposure to the
sun. Repeated exposure to UV radiation can cause even more
damage to the body’s immune system.
2. Ages skin - UV speeds up the aging of the skin. UV destroys
collagen and connective tissues beneath the top layer of the skin
that causes wrinkles, brown “liver” spots and loss of skin
elasticity.

Describe the effects of the Sun to human activities (Quarter 4, Week

Exercise 1
Directions/Instructions: Write the letter of the correct answer on the
line before each number.

_____1. One Saturday, you went swimming with your friend in the
nearby river. You noticed
that your skin was reddish. What was the harmful effect of the
sun’s heat to your skin?
a. boil b. cancer c. sunburn

_____2. What would be the probable effect if your eyes are exposed
to the glares of the sun?
a. Eyes would become cross-eyed.
b. Eyes would bulge.
c. Vision would be impaired.

_____3. When the intense heat is received on the earth’s surface and
there is no rainfall at all, what would be its effect on the
environment?
a. Soil would harden, crack and plant would wither.
b. There would be scarcity of water.
c. Both A and B
_____4. Norma placed her anthurium plant outside her house before
she left for Manila for two weeks. When she arrived she notice
that her plant has withered and yet the soil was wet. What
could have caused the withering of her plant? a. Animals
stepped on it.
b. Too much heat from the sun
c. A stray animal uprooted it.

_____5. Paul brought his carabao to the grassland to graze. He left his
animal under the sun the whole day. What would likely be the
harmful effect of heat on his animal?
a. His carabao would become sturdy.
b. His carabao would have sunburn.
c. His carabao would get sick.

Exercise 2
Directions/Instructions: Read the statements carefully. Write
Beneficial or Harmful on the line provided before each number.
