What is Process Control?
• Process control deals with equipments, strategies
and control algorithms associated with the
control of processes such as level process, flow
process, pressure process, temperature process
and other processes in an industry

Objective of Process Control
The main objectives of process control are:
• To maintain the process at desired set point value
• To ensure smooth transition of process from one
set point to another

Why (Need of) Process Control?
• To ensure safety
• To follow environmental regulations framed by
the government
• To meet the product specifications
• To meet the operational constraints
• To maximize profit
• To monitor and diagnose the process

Process Variables

Process Variables
The process variables are classified as:
• Input Variables
– Manipulated Variables
– Disturbances
• Measured disturbances
• Unmeasured Disturbances
• Output Variables (Controlled Variables)
– Measured outputs
– Unmeasured outputs

Process Variables
• Manipulated variables are those variables that can
be adjusted or altered to maintain the controlled
variable at a constant value.
• In the example of level control, the input flow rate is
the manipulated variable, using which level is
maintained constant.
• Disturbances are those variables that cannot be
adjusted by the operator. They are external noise or
unwanted inputs affecting the system outputs.
• The disturbances in some cases are measurable and
in other cases unpredictable and not measurable.

Process Variables
• Controlled variable is one which is to be
controlled.
• For example consider control of level in a tank
using the input flow rate. The level of the tank is
the controlled variable.
• The output variable can either be measured
outputs or unmeasured outputs.
• Measured outputs are those outputs whose
values can be known by direct measurement.
• Unmeasured outputs are those outputs that are
not or cannot be known by direct measurement.
