CEP Summary

- Brief introduction to CEP…

A stepper motor is an electric motor that rotates in discrete step increments. The movement
of each step is precise and repeatable; therefore the motor's position can be controlled
precisely without any feedback mechanism, as long as the motor is carefully sized to the
application. This type of control eliminates the need for expensive sensing and feedback
devices such as optical encoders. The position is known simply by keeping track of the input
step pulses. It is one of the most versatile forms of positioning systems. They are typically
digitally controlled as part of an open loop system, and are simpler and more rugged than
closed loop servo systems. Industrial applications include high speed pick and place
equipment and multi-axis CNC machines, often directly driving lead screws or ball screws.
In the field of optics they are frequently used in precision positioning equipment such as
linear actuators, linear stages, rotation stages, goniometers, and mirror mounts. Other uses
are in packaging machinery, and positioning of valve pilot stages for fluid control systems.
Commercially, stepper motors are used in floppy disk drives, flatbed scanners, computer
printers, plotters, slot machines, image scanners, compact disc drives and many more
devices

1
- Motivation and applications…
- For this motivation, stepper motors are the motor of choice for many precision
motion control applications. stepper motors are operated in inclusive collection
of exact motion and measurement appliances such as nuclear power plant,
aeronautics, robotic, automotive, medical, manufacturing industry etc. the best
example is the pick and place automatons used in surface mount technology
line. Besides, it is also applied remotely in hazardous and extreme environment
such as volcanic region, atomic or chemical plant, narrow spaces such as in a
collapsed building or underground, mountain region and robotic application
such as flying robot
-
- Problem statement and proposed solution…
Controlling speed of steeper motor with Arduino can be studied throughout this
project. These are very popular in our day to day life due to a lot of advantages and also in
digital control circuits, such as robotics because they are ideally suited for receiving digital
pulses for step control.

Objectives / Outcomes

We will see how to connect a stepper motor with an LABVIEW.  We will see what the stepper
motors are and how they work
