1. Design Criteria
Design Manual : MSMA 2nd Edition
Design Type : Wet Sediment Basin
Outlet Design Storm ARI : 10 years

2. Determination Time of Concentration

a) Overland Flow Time, to (minutes)

Table Friend's Equation

2.1
Table to = (107 × n* × L1/3)/S1/2
2.2 = (107 × 0.035 × 128.0001/3)/2.0001/5
= 16.43 min

Hence, standard storm duration = 20 min

3. Determination Type of Soil

Table Soil Type = Fine-grained loam, clay, more than
12.16 33%<0.02mm
= Dispersible fine-grained clays; more
than 10% of dispersible material
Wet Sediment Basin is selected

4. Determination of Basin Dimension

Table The 75th percentile 5-day storm event is 27.40 mm. Required
12.18 Settling
For Moderate to High runoff, the Settling Volume is Zone
112.18 m3/ha and the Total Volume is 167.90 m3/ha. Volume
= 115.29
The Required Settling Zone Volume for the site = m2
112.18 × 1.03 = 115.29 m3 Required

The Required Total Basin Volume for the site = 172.94

Settling Zone Average Width, W1 = 11.50 m

Settling Zone Average Length

L1 = V1/(W1 × y1)
= 115.29/(11.50 × 0.60)
= 16.71 m

Minimum L1 = W1 × 2.00 = 11.50 × 2.00 = 23.00 m

Maximum L1 = y1 × 200.00 = 120.00 m

Provided L1 = 23.00 m

Check Settling Zone Dimensions:

L1/y1 ratio = 23.00/0.60 = 38.33 38.33<20
0.00 OK
L1/W1 ratio = 23.00/11.50 = 2.00 2.00>2.0
0 OK
b) Sediment Storage Zone

The required Sediment Storage Zone Volume, V2 =

86.47 m3 (1/2 of the Total Basin Volume)

For a Side Slope Z = 2(H): 1(V), the dimensions at

top the Sediment Storage Zone are,
W2 = W1 - 2 × y1/2 × Z
= 11.50 - 2 × 0.60/2 × 2
= 10.30 m

L2 = L1 - 2 × y1/2 × Z
= 23.00 - 2 × 0.60/2 × 2
= 21.80 m

The required Depth for the Sediment Storage Zone,

which must be at least 0.3m, can be calculated from
the following relationship,
V2 = Z2y23 - Zy22(W2 + L2) + y2(W2L2)
Which gives. y2> 0.3
m
86.47 = 4y23 - 64.20y22 + 224.54y2 V2>86.4
7 m3 OK
For y2 = 0.44m, V2 = 86.71 m3

4.0 DESIGN RAINFALL INTENSITY

4.1 Adopted from Hydrological Procedure (HP) No. 1 revised in 2010 expressed
in Equation 2.2, MSMA 2nd Edition:

where,
i = average rainfall intensity (mm/hr)
T = average recurrence interval – ARI (0.5 ≤ T ≤ 12 months & 2 ≤ T ≤
100 years)
d = storm duration (hours), 0.0833 ≤ d ≤ 72
λ, K, θ, ƞ = fitting constants dependent on the raingauge location (Table 2.B1
in Appendix 2.B)

5.0 STAGE – DISCHARGE RELATIONSHIP

5.1 For a single orifice, orifice flow is estimated by the use of Equation 2.6,
MSMA 2nd Edition.
Q = Co Ao (2gHo)0.5
where,
Q = orifice flow rate (m3/s)
Co = discharge coefficient (0.60)
Ao = x-sectional area of orifice (m2)
Ho = effective head of the orifice measured from the centroid of the opening (m)
G = gravitational acceleration (9.81 m/s2)

If orifice discharges as a free outfall, effective head is measured from the

centerline of the orifice to the upstream water surface elevation
If orifice discharge is submerged, effective head is the difference in elevation
of the upstream and downstream water surfaces.
5.2 Broad-crested emergency spillway flow is estimated by the use of Equation
2.10, MSMA 2nd Edition.

where,
Q = emergency spillway discharge (m3/s)
CSP = spillway discharge coefficient (m0.5/s)
B = spillway base width (m)
Hp = effective head on the spillway weir crest (m)

The discharge coefficient CSP in Equation 2.10 varies as a function of spillway

base width and effective head (Table 2.7).
