( 2-3 sentences) and universities to close down to avoid
the spread of the pandemic and for the
learners, teachers, and school staffs to
stay at home. This also opened the idea
of online learning as the DEPED secretary
Leonor Briones said that “Education must
go on even in this time of crisis”

b. Short Background of the However, the implementation of online

issue
learning was questioned off its
( 2-3 sentences) credibility in helping learners and
teachers in the new normal. People asked
for a nationwide implementation of
“Academic Freeze”to consider the
hardships that the nations is going
through right now with the effects of the
pandemic. Many people trended the
hashtags “No Students Left Behind” and
“AcademicFreezeNOW”hoping that there
voices and opinions will be heard.

Body Explanation
A. Counter Arguments
1. Short-sighted position 1.DepEd oppose the growing call of “
Academic Freeze”. According to Education
Secretary Nepomuceno (2020), “the
suspension of classes in the wake of the
COVID-19 crisis was a ‘shortsighted’ solution.”
He added that the call of academic freeze is “is
a populist position that is not popular, because
we already have the support of as many as 24
million learners and their parents who have
enrolled and are ready to participate in
distance learning.”
2. Students' losing momentum in learning According to Cornelio (2020), “the possibility of
students losing their ‘momentum in learning’ is
high.” He also added that academic freeze
compare to sem break which is just a week but
causes students hard to feel motivated again
how much more if academic freeze is
implemented assuming that it’s for a year.
B. Your Arguments
1. Implementing the academic freeze Growing call of academic freeze during
during pandemic is not being short pandemic is not the position of being short-
sighted sighted but a way of making education more
productive that helps students to find
motivation and inspiration to work more.
2. Implementation of academic freeze Comparing sem-break to academic freeze is
has nothing to do with momentum not the same because this time students are
in learning being isolated from people and activities that
can help them. Gaining motivation is not a
problem better than feeling anxious, stressed
and depressed because of modules that will
not help them to be productive.
