Activity 3
Let’s Observe!
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Get an object with wheels that are large enough to hold one of your family
members seated as it moves. You may use a bicycle, a trolley, a cart or a chair
with wheels.
2. Choose an observer to seat on the moving system.
3. Have the observer sit on the moving system and practice pushing it with a
constant speed.

Activity 3
Let’s Observe!
4. Once you can move the cart a constant speed, give the moving observer a ball.
While the car is moving at a constant speed, have the observer throw the ball
straight up and then catch it.
a. How does the person on the cart see the ball move? Let the observer
sketch it (thru drawing/picture). Then, explain your observations in not
more than 5 sentences.
Based on the observation, we can see that the ball that was thrown straight up

b. How does a person on the ground see the ball move? Let the observer on
the ground sketch it (thru drawing/picture). Then, explain your
observations in not more than 5 sentences.
As we can see on the drawing that is presented above, we can see that the ball
simply travelled a parabolic path. The drawing showed that the person’s view on

5. With the observer on the cart traveling at constant speed, let a student on the
ground throw a ball straight up and catch it.

We can conclude in terms of the path of the ball that was thrown by the
two different observers that the path of the ball depends on the frame of
reference because it is a set of coordinates itself and the path of the ball
depends on how much force you put and your positions if you’re riding a car
or bike at a constant speed or just standing at rest. Even if the ball was
thrown by two different observers, the path will still be based on someone’s
perspective or judgment regarding what they saw or observed while doing the
activity.
