How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

I will have students listen to my podcast the night before the lesson of compare and contrast. The
following day, I will review with the students what was in the podcast by stating the learning
objectives and standards. We will utilize technology by creating a Venn diagram on Canva. I will
show the students how to navigate the online tool and mentioning all the different templets they
can chose from. Once picking my own templet, I will write ‘summer’ and ‘winter’ for the topic of the
example. I will ask students what the similarities and differences between the two seasons are. Once
students have grasped the concept of comparing and contrasting, we will begin the lesson by
reading Dog vs. Cat. Students are to find the differences in the story between the two characters. At
the end of the book, we will create another Venn diagram, together, with ‘dog vs. cat’. Once we
have found all the similarities and differences between the two characters, the students will work on
Canva to create their own Venn diagram. Since this is a first-grade class, students are to copy what
we have worked on together. To provide feedback on the students, students will post on a
discussion board for feedback. To conclude the lesson, students will review what they know about
comparing and contrasting.

Managing student learning:

With this tool, students can work together on creating their Venn diagram. Canva allows more than
one person to work on the same assignment just by sharing a link. This will allow students to
become active social learners because they can work with a partner when learning how to use
Canva.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:

Canva can be used on any type of electronic device to support all students. This tool enhances
student learning because it’s a tool they can progressively learn about and use as they go on to
higher grade levels. A UDL principle that I provided was representation. I provided perception by
allowing students to customize their Venn diagram to display their information. This gave students a
bit of choice when creating their activity.
Reflection:
I believe this activity will improve student learning. Though it is mostly teacher-led, there are some
spaces for students to make their own choices. I look forward to teaching about comparing and
contrasting. As well as seeing how students will use Canva to create their own Venn diagrams. I
thought, at first, that first-graders may not be able to use Canva. However, I believe you explain and
demonstrate, students will be able to learn.
