ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT

Learning Competency:
 Uses various strategies in order to avoid communication breakdown. EN11/12OC-Ia-6

I. SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


At the end of the lesson the students would be able to:
a.) Differentiate verbal and non- verbal cues in communication.
b.) Appreciate the importance of using verbal and non-verbal cues.
c.) Perform communicative activities involving verbal and non- verbal cues.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Verbal and Nonverbal Communication


A. Reference: Oral Communication in Focus for Senior High School pp. 12-13
B. Materials: laptop, pictures and printed instructional materials, TV screen

Review
Different GIFs will be shown to the class. Each GIF conveys different meanings. The students will be
asked for their interpretations. Expectedly, they may have different understandings. Therefore, all
answers will be entertained.
C. Motive Question:
How does verbal and non- verbal cues affect the way we communicate specially in this new normal?
D. Lesson Proper
From the student’s different viewpoints, the teacher will explain that communication is one of the God’s
great gifts bestowed to human. God not only created speaking potential with diverse dialects in the
human body, but also taught him how to use it through inspiration, his inner instinct, or external
guidance. Just like when communicating to someone, everything you say and do means something.
Oftentimes, misunderstanding occurs when the message perceived is different from the intended
message. To prevent such, we will talk about verbal and nonverbal cues.
The teacher will present a video clip about verbal and non- verbal cues and will ask the students what did
they noticed from the video they’ve watched.

After watching the Video clip the teacher will ask the students to differentiate verbal and non- verbal
cues according to what they have observed through the use of Venn diagram.

Introduce the different types of verbal communication.

IV. APPLICATION
“Tell Me, I’ll Show!”
Pick a partner on your class it can be your close friend or a friend.
All must pair with one person.
One student will introduce his/her partner verbally while the other will act the way he/she described
by his/her partner.

V. GENERALIZATION

To make sure that the lesson is learned, the teacher will call students to answer and complete these
statement:

“Knowing verbal and nonverbal communication is important because…”

Watch, Listen and Learn!

Watch and Listen to the conversation of the president and his secretary and know the communication
barriers that happened in this short video clip.
As you listen to the speech, I want you to think of what effective communication skills to use to avoid
misunderstanding and how does verbal and non- verbal cues affect the way we communicate?

VII. ASSIGNMENT:
Design a digital mind map that will summarize our discussion about Verbal and Non- verbal cues.

Annotation:

For children with special needs to achieve high academic standards and exhibit their
conceptual and procedural knowledge and skills in reading, writing, speaking, and
listening, their education must include supports and accommodations. This lesson plan
makes use of visual aids to accommodate students with hearing impairments by including
images into the lesson delivery.
