FIGURES OF SPEECH
A figure of speech expresses an idea, thought, or image with words which carry meanings
beyond their literal ones. It gives extra dimension to language by stimulating the imagination and evoking
visual, sensory images. It is a language that paints a mental picture in words.
There are figures of speech that show comparison. These are Simile and Metaphor.
Simile is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things, often introduced with the word like or as.
(Note: Using like and as doesn’t make a Simile. It is significant to make a comparison.)
The moon is like a pizza. (It is an example of Simile since comparison is made
as both of them are round)
They fought like cats and dogs. (It means they fight and argue a lot like cats and dogs)
She is as brave as a lion. (It means that her bravery is comparable to that of a lion)
Metaphor is a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things. As a literary device,
metaphor creates implicit comparisons WITHOUT the use of “like” or “as.”
You are the light. (It means you are the hope)
Life is a highway. (Just like a highway, one day you’re at a certain place and
the next day you’re not on the same highway)
