MAKING THE APPARATUS BEADY FOR A TEST

Place the apparatus preferably at the end of the test bench and .rearer to sink as
shown in the sketch so that there \/vill be space to keep the measuring jar'beneath the
swinging outlet arm and the sink can be used to drain the overflowing water, Adjust the
leveling screws of the calorimeter so that the entire apparatus is in vertical position. lnsert
the Thermometer into their respective positions as shor.rn in figure(l), kqe ping ihe scaies
visible and conveniently to the observer. Connect the Outlet en(l o{ the Gas Flon, nreter
lo the burner (6) by means of the rubber tube supplied. Level the Gas Flowmeter usrrrg
the spirit Level and adjLlsting the l€iveling screws. Pour in the waterthrough the hole
provided for inserting the thermometer in iigure (2) till it reaches the nrark on th-e glass
window. lf the water level goes above the rnark on glass window drain the excess water
by opening the stop cock provided underneath the Water Level indication Block. AIso
drain the excess water by opening the knurled screw provided olr lhe rear side of the
meter as in figure (2) Replace back the screw tightly.

Now fix the thermometer in flowmeter as shown in figure (2) Conriect the Outlet
of tire Pressure Governor to the inlet o, flowmeter by rubber tubing. Renrove the knurled
head screw from the.over flow tube of the governor. Lift tfre float lirhtly by holding the
thread and pour water till the water over flows through the side \&al! tube Beplace back
the knurled head screw tightly. Connect the inlet of the Governor to the gas supply.

SEE THAT THE COVER IS PLACED

Connect the water supply lrOm over head cisternor v,/ater tap to watel inlet (9 of
figure (1) ) Connect the rubber tube to the water fiou,,tube (10 of figure ('l) ) the outer
end of which is placed in a sink.

T,,IAKING A TEST

Turn on the water mains by opening the control knot) of the Gas Calonmeter to
setting 'on'. Acl.iust the water supply in such a way that there will be only a small amount
of overflow of excess water, to sink. By this the air bubbles inside the water circulating
will be let out.

Remove the burner fi'om the calorimeter. Open the oulict tap ot the governor.
Allow the gas to pass for three or four revolutions as inclicated by the ilov,/rneter. Then
light the burner and adjust the air regulator sleeve and the gas tap to get a non lulninous
flame. Clamp the burner keeping it to the top most position. Then adiust the flow of
water to get a temperature dit erence of '12 C to 15' C between the water inlet and outlet
temperature. This is important il the flow of water is less that required, there will be a
high temperature difierence and the water may escape as stearn. So the water flow is
tc b= acijusted ii. such a way that ttiere v{ill not be formation of steem. Allow the water
outlet the, inometer tc inoicate a sleady :emDsrature wri;ch rnay take ahout 2C to 30
rninr.rtes. Keep tire measuring jar beneath the slvingi'tg watei' cutlet tul,-e and
simultaneously count the nurnber of revoiuiions macie i)!r ihe gas tlo'"vrreter pointer, i.e
to fird the volurne of gas ccnsumed during the lest period. lvhen the ilcrnter has i-nace
2 or 3 revolutions swing the water outlet back to waste.

Also immediately note the temperatures of water inlet ancl orrtlet as well as gas
flowmeter keeping the water flow and gas flow same repeat the expenment th!.ice or four
times and take average ol the readings and calculate the calotific value of the gas using
the following formtrla.

(vui;vg) x (t2 - t1) x looo '

PBECAUTIONS

The gas governor should be kept perfectly horizontal and there shcirld not be
,1

excess water or insufficient water.

2 Test readings are to be taken only after the steady conditions are reached

3 Formation of steam shouirl not be allowed. If there is formation of steam then

increase the ilou,/ cf water or reduce the gas flow rate.

4 There should not tle much variatior-r in vclocity of flowing water frorr tap.

5 The synthetic rubber washers used at the ioints, an.l piugs should be rerixed ii
they are removed for any reason.

6 The inner float of the presSure governor should be removed sincc it may vary the
outlet pressure when refixed.

7 During the initial stages air bubbles can be easily removed by opening the stop
cock at the bottom of the Gas Calorimeter and letting out cerlarn quantity ot water
through it. lf the flow to the outlet iunnei is irregular it inclicates, there is air locking
or there is consiclerable variation in velocity of the tap uiater.

MAINTENANCE

Aiways clean the equipment after the tests

Remiive water from gasmeter and Gas Governor once in two rTlonths and fill up with
Distilled water.
