How do you know if someone is a true friend or not? Finding someone you really click with can
be quite a challenge. A true friend is someone who you can rely on when you need it. They
treat you with respect and being around them makes you feel good. They have your best
interest at heart. You feel comfortable being yourself with them and you can trust them.

A true friend…

1. Makes you feel good

You should feel good hanging out with a friend. And after you’ve hung out, you should leave
with a good feeling. If they put you down or make you feel bad on a regular basis, there’s
something important missing in your relationship.

2. Accepts you for who you are

You don’t have to pretend to be someone else to fit in or feel accepted when you’re with a
true friend. They don’t try to change you or make you behave in a certain way. With your
friend, you can put down your mask, relax, and be yourself.

3. 3. Is honest and trustworthy

Honesty is an important part of any healthy friendship. It’s important that you can trust your
friend to tell you the truth and keep their promises. If you notice that they’re lying to you or to
others, it’s a sign they’re not that trustworthy.

I’m going to talk about Hazel, who is one of
my closest friends ever.
Actually, Hazel is her English name; her
Vietnamese name is Ly. But I’ll use Hazel
because I know she likes that. She’s one year
younger than me. We used to live next door,
but now we live in the same flat.
I want to talk about Hazel for several reasons.
First, she’s very kind. She’s willing to give
others a hand, and she always stands by
me whenever I need help. Last year, I had a
high fever and had to be hospitalised for a
week. She took a week off to take care of me.
Second, she’s a patient person. Unlike me who
can get angry very easily, Hazel’s able to stay
calm in almost every situation. In terms
of being patient, I am learning a lot from her. I
remember last week, both of us had to wait for
another friend for nearly two hours because he
got up late and got stuck in traffic. During
those two hours, I kind of lost my
temper and constantly complained. I
was pacing back and forth, while Hazel was
just sitting there reading a book. At first, I was
really angry and wondered why she was so
relaxed in that situation, but afterwards, she
said to me: ‘You need to learn how to enjoy
every minute of your life’. Then, I realised that
I was wasting my time doing pointless things,
and from that moment, I knew that I needed
Tôi sẽ nói về Hazel, một trong những người
bạn thân nhất của tôi từ trước đến giờ.
Thật ra, Hazel là tên tiếng Anh của cô ấy; tên
tiếng Việt của cô là Lý. Nhưng tôi sẽ gọi
Hazel vì tôi biết cô ấy thích điều đó. Cô ấy
nhỏ hơn tôi một tuổi. Chúng tôi đã từng là
hàng xóm, nhưng bây giờ chúng tôi sống
trong cùng một căn hộ.

Hazel có thể giữ bình tĩnh trong hầu hết mọi
tình huống. Về mặt kiên nhẫn, tôi đang học
hỏi được nhiều điều từ cô ấy. Tôi nhớ tuần
trước, cả hai chúng tôi phải đợi một người
bạn khác gần hai tiếng đồng hồ vì anh ấy dậy
muộn và bị kẹt xe. Trong hai giờ đó, tôi mất
bình tĩnh và liên tục phàn nàn. Tôi đi đi lại
lại, trong khi Hazel chỉ ngồi đó đọc sách. Lúc
đầu, tôi thực sự bực tức và tự hỏi tại sao cô
ấy rất thoải mái trong tình huống đó, nhưng
sau đó, cô ấy nói với tôi: ‘Cậu cần học cách
tận hưởng từng giây phút trong cuộc sống
của bạn.’ Sau đó, tôi nhận ra rằng tôi đang
lãng phí thời gian làm những việc vô nghĩa,

I’m so lucky to have a friend like her.
