I. GENERAL
1 Preamble

This document covers 380KV, 115KV & 13.8 KV CT sizing calculation (Typical CTs) for the 380KV Lines,
380/115KV Transformer, 115KV Lines, 115/13.8KV Transformer and 13.8KV Incomer lines, Bus section, SST, and
PT sizing calculation at NEW QATIF 380/115/13.8KV BSP.

2 Design Basis

2.1 CT and other Details

CT parameters are based on:

i) System X/R ratio and Fault current isn't mentioned in PTS-09EN313. Therefor we considered the values as
(17 for 380KV) and (17 for 115KV) based on the GIS data schedule. (please refer to Annexure G)
ii) As mentioned in PTS-09EN313, Appendix VII, IEC-44, Part-6 and IEC 185, TPS class CT for all protection cores
are considered.
iii) CT secondary excitation limiting E.M.F and other parameters for CT sizing are calculated at adopted Tap as shown
in Relay and metering one line diagram EA-150724.

iv) Lead length is considered for 2 ways.

v) Safety margin of 20% is considered for protection class CT and for metering class CT multiplication factor of 1.2
is considered as per PTS.

vi) Rct and Rl values are at 75oC.

vii) Zs (source Impedance) is calculated based on CB Interrupting capacity. The line Impedance value will be
added to Zs to derive the fault current (PF & EF) at zone1 end for CT excitation limiting E.M.F
calculation. Only on way CT lead length is considered for PF zone1 Ual calculation & 2way CT lead
length is considered for EF zone1 Ual calculation. CT sizing calculation for close-in fault is done for
3phase fault since 63/40/25KA (for 380/115/13.8KV respectively) fault level is considered for 3 phase
and 1 phase fault.

2.3 CT lead size & Resistance

The
ρ
R= Ω/m
A
Where,

r = Specific resistance at 20oC

A = Cross-sectional area of conductor

For other temperatures,

rJ = r20 [1 + a (J - 20)]

J = Temperature

a = Temperature Co-efficient

Value of r & a are given in table 2.7 of ABB switchgear manual

reference book for a temperature of 20oC.

Resistance for 6sq.mm cable per meter @ 75OC

= 0.0175
1  0.004(75 - 20)
6

= 0.0035 ohms/m

Resistance for 6 sq.mm conductor/m @ 75OC = 0.0035 ohms/m

2.4 Terminology

Isn : Rated secondary current

Eal : CT excitation limiting E.M.F (Eal = Ual Since leakage is negligible in TPS class CT)

Rct : Maximum resistance of secondary winding at 75OC

Rb : Rated resistive burden

ktd : Dimensioning factor

2.5 Important formula for TPS class CT:

Eal = kssc * ktd * (Rct + Rb) * Isn

Ual = kssc * k * (Rct + Rb) * Isn
