Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Invasive Species

Content Area: Environmental Science
Grade Level(s): 9th
Content Standard Addressed: SEV2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to construct
explanations of stability and change in Earth’s ecosystems. d. Construct an argument to support a claim
about the value of biodiversity in ecosystem resilience including keystone, invasive, native, endemic,
indicator, and endangered species.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Selected Technology Tool: E-Book from PPT

Levels of Technology Integration: (Select the one best level) (If you are unable to add a check mark to the
box, remove the box and use a bolded X to identify your selection. DO NOT use highlighting to select your
choice. DELETE ALL RED TEXT BEFORE SUBMITTING.)
☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The UDL for this lesson plan shows the engagement of the kids. Instead
of just reading the power point individually, they now hear my voice leading them through it as if we were in
class. They have the visual and auditory learning with both the power point and the video analysis that
follows.

Lesson idea implementation: The learning will be taken to a higher level by completing the video analysis
and applying what they have learned to the power point presentation they will conduct. Communicating the
scientific knowledge, they not only learned from the invasive species video, but also the power point I created
for them as well. Students will watch the power point video I created for them along with the video on
invasive species. They will then conduct research on their assigned invasive species and create a movie power
point presentation such as I did on their species.

Reflective Practice: This is a good midway assignment for the biodiversity unit. The only major differences I
could and would change is the opinion of the students being catered to more. Allowing for them to have
some say, even if it is just allowing for them to pick their invasive species.
