you a question. Who among you
here love to watch speeches like
Ted talks, interviews, anything (Some students raise their hands)
spoken?

Wow. That’s great that you try to

expand your knowledge by
watching these kinds of videos.
Now, what makes you listen to (A student voluntarily raises his/her

them?

volunteers)

That’s great! I love how you are

looking at them with that
perspective. Thank you for
sharing your ideas to the class.

I know you guys have a lot of

other ideas, but I’m sure that we
could group those ideas until we
come up with the main things we
base our evaluation of spoken
texts on, and that is exactly what
we are going to do. Are you
ready? Yes, Ma’am!

-With your huddle, open the
video I sent to you entitled “Buy
my Facial Wash”.
-In that video, you are going to
see two speakers selling a facial
wash. Watch the video carefully
and compare the two speakers.
-Write your comparisons in
sentences on the manila paper
I’ll be providing you. You should
at least come up with 4 different
comparisons.
-Finally, choose which speaker
would you buy the facial wash
from and explain your choice.
-You have 10 minutes to finish
this activity.
-After finishing, post your
answers on the board and
choose 1 representative to share
your group’s work. Let’s have a

Josh, please take the stage.

Thank you, representatives. I am

proud to say that you have
exerted a considerate amount of
thinking while doing this task.
Everything that you put there is
interesting. All of you also chose
the same speaker. Let us see if
you have correctly evaluated
them.

c. Abstraction Thank you so much students. As

you can see, you guys are able
to summarize the similar
thoughts and we are down to
these four qualities you saw that
distinguish a good spoken text.
Now if we are to make these as
criteria for evaluating a spoken
text, then wouldn’t it be great to
learn what their actual terms
are? Your answers are the clues
to these terms. As a matter of
fact, they are the direct
definition. Let’s try it. Take a look
at the first sentence here written (Row 1 reads the sentence in
by Kayla. Row 1, please read. unison.)

What term could we be talking I guess it is fluency?

Thank you, Vic for that! Now,
can somebody summarize From what I’ve heard, fluency is
everything that we have talked speaking with proper speed, clarity,
about so far regarding fluency? and confidence.
Yes, Karina.

Greatly summarized. Thank you,

Fluency is speaking effortlessly,

refers to how “smoothly” and
efficiently” a speaker can speak.
Fluency encompasses two
concepts- speech rate and speech
continuity.

Raise your hand if you want to (The students raise their hands.)
be a fluent speaker.

rate?

What about speech continuity? I think it means that a sentence is

linked to the next, then that
sentence to the next, and so on.

Very good! Now pay attention to

the word “link” because that will
lead us to the next criterion.
Let’s go back to the sentences The one written by Ben about
on the board. Which sentence cohesive devices.
has anything to do with link or
linking sentences?

refreshing our minds. Now, what
about our third criterion? Row 2,

Thank you, Row 2. This one’s

much easier to guess, don’t you I think the next criterion is tone.

Now we are down to our last

criteria. Please read the last (Row 3 reads the sentence in

3.

Thank you. Now what do you

think is the term we use to refer I think it is correctness.
to the grammar of the spoken
text?

That is correct! Everybody, Correctness in a spoken text is

please read. focused on the correct use of
grammar, vocabulary, and
pronunciation.

As you have read, correctness

does not just concern grammar
but also vocabulary and
pronunciation. Raise your hand if
you want to be a speaker who
follows the grammar accurately,
uses appropriate vocabulary,
and demonstrates clear
pronunciation. (The students raise their hands.)

Quick review: The students answer:

d. Application
Now that you are familiar with
the criteria we use to evaluate a
spoken text, let’s apply that
learning, this time individually.
Are you ready? Yes, Ma’am!

Here are the instructions:

You will watch a spoken text- an

interview with Miss Universe
Philippines 2022 Davao del
Norte, Jean Nicci Orcena. Listen
carefully, understand what she is
saying and observe her based
on fluency, coherence, tone, and
correctness.

To be more accurate in
evaluating, I will give each one
of you a rubric. Kindly get one
and pass.

Now scan the rubric and pay

attention to each description in
the scale. Highest score you can
give is 5 and the lowest is 2.
After that, compute the overall
score you have given to the
speaker.

After 3 minutes, we will then

proceed to our quiz regarding
the criteria we discussed and the
content of the spoken text. Just
write your answers at the back of
the rubric I gave you. Now it is
important that you do not look at
the rubric for clues to answer the
quiz. If you do that, I, especially
you cannot tell which part of our
lesson you need help with.
What’s our class principle no. 1
again?

Good. Can I trust you with that? Be honest.

Alright. Are the instructions
clear? Yes, Ma’am.

Great. Then let us now watch Yes, Ma’am.

the interview.

You now have 3 minutes to (The students watch the interview.)

evaluate the speaker.

Time’s up. Everybody, turn your (The students rate the speaker with
papers backwards and answer the rubric.)
the following questions.

V. EVALUATION

Identify the criterion described in each situation below.

1. Karla presented a report to the class. During her presentation, she often stopped and paused
unnecessarily which made it hard for the class to understand the thought of the presentation.
What does Karla need to improve? (FLUENCY)
2. Alex explained to his brother how to create a Roblox account, but his brother could not
understand the instructions because Alex was illogical in the order of the steps. What does Alex
need help with? (COHERENCE)
3. Angela talked to her friend to apologize about her moody attitude last week. However, her
apology was not accepted because instead of being sincere, she sounded angry. Angela needs
to change her___. (TONE)
4. Lolita was spreading the story of how her husband beat her last month. However, many did not
believe her because of the inconsistencies in her verb tenses which some suggested was an
indication of lying. Among the criteria we tackled, which one will Lolita probably score the least?
(CORRECTNESS)
5. Explain in five sentences why is there a need to evaluate a spoken text? (ANSWERS VARY)

VI. AGREEMENT
Reflect on your own speaking competence. Rate yourself using the same rubric we used during
class. Identify which among the four criteria is your strength and which is your weakness.
Provide three (3) concrete ways to help you improve your weakest aspect.
