Good day, learners! At the end of our topic, you are expected to:
1. define motivation, leadership, and communication; and
2. understand how motivation, leadership and communication work in an organization.

Let’s review!
In your previous lessons, you have learned about the importance of compensation, wages, performance evaluation, appraisal,
and reward system.

Activity 1
Directions:

Motivation, Leadership, and Communication

Motivation is a goal-oriented characteristic that supports an individual or employee in an organization to attain his
objectives. It helps the employee to work hard in attaining his or her goals. A manager must have the right leadership

Motivation is the state of the individual’s willingness to do the job without mental reservation as it springs from the need
for satisfaction that exists in the work environment (Pereda, et.al., 2011).

Managers and employees must possess leadership skills and motivation skills. To be an effective leader, one must have
enough knowledge of motivational factors for others. Understanding the basic needs of employees , peers, and superiors.
Leadership is the ability of a leader to influence others through an influential process with the intent to accomplish a set
of goals or objectives (Okoji, 2015). Leaders use communication in their leadership capacity. They can also use a variety of
leadership skills and styles to accomplish their goals in the organization as well as to their people (Boykins, et. al., 2013).

Communication is defined as the process of passing information and develops understanding from one person to another.
It is the transfer of information that bridges meaning between people in the organization. Using an effective communication
medium can make people safely cross the river of misunderstanding that separates people (Pereda, et. al., 2011)

Directions: Cite at least five (5) leadership styles that most leaders apply in a business or organization and explain briefly each
style.

1. As an ABM student, what do you think are the most important characteristics of a good leader?
2. Why do leaders need to be an effective communicator?
3. Do you believe that a good leader must possess good communication skills? Why or why not?
