Example 1
Design cross regulator and head regulator on a main canal, the cross regulator passes 80% of main
canal discharge and head regulator passes 20 % of main canal discharge at normal water flow.
Main canal discharge is 10 m3/sec,
Cross regulator
US bed level of main canal=45.0 m
Main canal
DS bed level of main canal=45.0 m
Qc=80% of main canal
DS bed level of branch canal= 45.60 m Q normal = 10 m3/sec

Cross regulator controlled by 3 gate each 1.0 m width

Head regulator
DS water depth of main canal 1.5 m
Branch canal
DS water depth of branch canal 1.0m
Qb=20% of main canal
Design the following :
1- Calculate water way (Sw) for head regulator consider Cd=0.90
for both structure. Use full opened gate and free flow
2- For incoming discharge of 20 m3/sec at main canal, Cross regulator
calculate gate opening for head regulator to pass
Main canal
2 m3/sec for branch canal. Water depth at DS of
main canal = 3.0 m and 1.0m for branch canal. Q normal = 20 m3/sec Q cross regulator
Consider partial gate opining and free flow
at Head Regulator. Cd=0.62 for partial opening and Cd=0.9 for
Head regulator
Free flow
Branch canal
3- For case of low flow Q= 6 m3/sec form main canal Qb=2.0 m3/sec
, calculate the gate opening at cross regulator to
provide sufficient head of water to secure water Cross regulator
flow of 1.5 m3/sec at head regulator. Water depth at DS of Main canal
main canal = 0.35 m and 0.60m for branch canal.
Q cross regulator
Cd=0.62 for partial opening and Cd=0.9 for Q normal = 6 m3/sec
Free flow
Head regulator
Neglect velocity head for all cases.
Branch canal

Qb=1.5 m3/sec
Solution :
Discharge of branch canal = 0.20 x 10 = 2 m3/sec
Remaining discharge to pass over cross regulator = 10-2 = 8 m3/sec
Discharge though cross and head regulator for full open case:
Q= × × ×
2
Cross regulator
=3 1=3
= 1.5
= 0.90
Q= × × × 2  8 = 0.90 × 3.0 × 1.5 × 2 × 9.81 ×
H=.199 m ≅ 0.20 m
US water level = 45 + 1.5 +0.20 = 46.70 m
For head regulator :
US water level = 46.70m
DS water level = 45.6 +1.0 = 46.60 m
= 1.0
= 0.90
Q= 2.0 m3/sec
=" # $% &$'$& − ) # $% &$'$& = 46.70 − 46.60 = 0.10
Calculate gate width ( water way ) by following equation
Q= × × ×
2 2 = 0.90 × × 1 × 2 × 9.81 × 0.10
SW = 1.58 m use 1.60 m gate opining.
2- For high discharge of 20 m3/sec,
Remain discharge for cross regulator =20-2= 18 m3/sec
=3 1=3
=3
= 0.90
Q= × × ×
2  18 = 0.90 × 3.0 × 3.0 × 2 × 9.81 ×
H=0.251m
US water level = 45 + 3 +0.25 = 48.25 m
For head regulator :
US water level = 48.25m
DS water level = 45.6 +1.0 = 46.60 m
Y1=48.25-45.6=2.65 m
Sw=1.60 m
Q= × × - × 2 1 2 = 0.62 × 1.6 × - × 2 × 9.81 × 2.65
W= 0.278 m
3- case of law flow , Qmain = 6 m3/sec Q branch = 1.5 m3/sec
remain discharge for cross regulator = 4.5 m3/sec
For Head regulator
= 0.6
= 0.90
Q= × × ×
2 1.5 = 0.90 × 1.60 × 0.60 × 2 × 9.81 ×
H=0.153 m
US water level = 45.60+0.60+0.153=46.353 m
Cross regulator
= 0.35
= 0.90
DS water level =45.0+0.35 =45.35 m
H= 46.353 -45.35 =1.003 m
Q= × × ×
2 4.5 = 0.90 × × 0.35 × 2 × 9.81 × 1.003
Sw= 3.22 m,
The calculated Sw is greater than all gates length, mean the water cannot pass to DS freely
Use partial open of cross regulator
Y1=46.353-45.0=1.353
Q= × ×-× 2 1 4.5 = 0.62 × × - × 2 × 9.81 × 1.353
× - = 1.408 m2
Use 2 gate with opining 0.704 m
Or 3 gate with opining 0.469 m
