• Solve simple problems on notches

9C304.36 2
Recap

In the previous session, you have learnt about

• Derivation of discharge formulae for trapezoidal notch

• Advantages of triangular notch over rectangular notch

Problems

1. A rectangular notch of crest width 0.4m is used to

measure the flow of water in a channel of same width

and 0.45m deep, if the depth of water above the crest is

0.225m. Find out the discharge. Take coefficient of

discharge as 0.63

Width L = 0.4m

Head H = 0.225m

2. A rectangular notch of crest width 0.8m is used to

measure the flow of water in a channel of same width

and 0.60m deep, if the depth of water above the crest is

0.30m. Find out the discharge. Take coefficient of

discharge as 0.63

3.A rectangular channel of 0.15m width is used to carry

0.2cum of water. The rate of flow is measured by placing

a 900 V- notch weir. If the maximum depth of water

is not to exceed 1.2m, find the position of the apex of the

notch from the bed of the channel. Assume Cd = 0.6

9C304.36 8
Solution

Given data : Width of rectangular notch (b) = 1.5m

Q = 0.2 m3/sec, θ = 900 and Cd = 0.6
Let H = height of water above the apex of notch

4.During an experiment in a laboratory, 280 litres of

water flowing over a right angled notch was collected in

one minute. If the head of water over the sill is 100mm,

calculate the coefficient of discharge of the notch.
