Objectives

On completion of this session ,you would be able to

• Derive the discharge formula for a trapezoidal notch

• Solve simple problems on discharge over a trapezoidal

notch

Recap

In the previous session, you have learnt about

• Derivation of Discharge formula for triangular notch

• Advantages of triangular notch over rectangular notch

• Solving simple problems on triangular notch

Trapezoidal Notch

• A trapezoidal notch is a combination of a rectangular

and a triangular notch as such the discharge over a

notch is determined by adding the two.

If ’ L ‘ be crest length and
θ
2 be the angle of inclination of its sides with vertical ,then
Discharge over trapezoidal notch is given by :

8 θ 5
Q= Cd1 2gLH 2 + Cd 2 2gTan H 2
3 15 2
Where Cd1 and Cd2 = Co- efficients of discharge for triangular

and rectangular portions of trapezoidal notch

H = Head over the sill

Problems

1. A trapezoidal notch is 0.5m wide at the bottom. The slide

slopes are 1: 1. Find the discharge through the notch when

the head is 0.2m. Take Cd as 5/8
