Ready to Launch!

This self-learning package will introduce you to the idea of making effective communi-
cation based on sound observations. This will enable you to demonstrate the skill of effective-
ly communicating recorded observations which will help you meet the basic human needs and
improve living standards.
Science communication is part of a scientist’s everyday life. Researchers must give talks,
write papers and proposals, communicate with a variety of audiences, and educate others.
Thus to be successful, researchers must learn how to communicate . Moreover, scientists
must learn how to communicate effectively. In other words, to be a successful scientist, you
must be an effective communicator. Furthermore, the source of the messages to be present-
ed / communicated must be based on credible observations.
Communication is the giving or exchanging of information in various forms such as ver-
bal, tabular, graphical or pictorial.

Aim at the Target!

This section will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you are expected to
learn.
This self-learning package generally aims to:
Effectively communicate the result of observations (SSP_RS7SPS-Ig-8)
Furthermore, it specifically aims to:
1. Enumerate the steps in the communication process.
2. Describe the importance of communicating observation effectively

Activity 1. Writing your Observation Report
Let’s review for awhile the steps in making credible observations in order to communicate Now that you’re done with your observation/ gathering of your data, its time to sit down

You need to demonstrate to the reader that you are looking at the situation
through the eyes of an informed viewer, not just as a random viewer. Don’t forget to base
your interpretations on what you observed. Do not speculate or manipulate your data to fit
into your study.

2. Do the summary
When you’re done writing your report, conclude it with a summary of what you saw. You
can also draw some conclusions about what you think about your observation. Explain what
observations mean to you and what they might mean to the potential reader. Combine eve-
rything in a concise paragraph.

3. Edit and proofread
When you’re done with your report, proofread and edit your paper carefully. You should
edit for content shortcomings, grammar errors, lack of clarity and spelling mistakes. Read
the paper over very carefully. You can even ask someone to proofread it for you. Make sure
that the paper makes sense and it clearly expresses what you are trying to say.
So that’s it. You are now ready to hand that paper to your professor now that you know
how to write an observation report. It’s one good way of practicing a new skill and it will
help enhance your observational skills that will help you later on. So start writing. Start ob-
serving.

Abstraction and Generalization This section will help you to think carefully and what the idea means for you and
your ongoing progress as a learner.
Now that you have learned about making observations based on evidence and commu-
nication skills, this is now the time for you to solidify your understanding and skill of the topic
through the chart presented below.
THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS

Source: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newCS_99.htm Answer this question: What is not right in the picture, and why?
During this process, the person who is the source of the communication encodes it
into a message and transmits it through a channel. The receiver decodes the message, and, in
one way or another, feeds back his or her understanding or a lack of understanding of the
source.
By understanding the steps in the process, you can become more aware of your role
in it, recognize what you need to do to communicate effectively, anticipate problems before
they happen, and improve your overall ability to communicate effectively.
