WHAT IS IT?
(Write the definition)
Dale’s Cone of Experience is a model that incorporates several theories related to instructional
design and learning processes. During the 1960s, Edgar Dale theorized that learners retain more WHAT IS IT LIKE?
information by what they “do” as opposed to what is “heard”, “read” or “observed”. His
research led to the development of the Cone of Experience. Today, this “learning by doing” has
become known as “experiential learning” or “action learning”. Define

- The individual bands of the Cone of Experience stand for experiences that are fluid, extensive and
continually interact. The experience of reality are arrange in the coned of experience from
concrete, active actual to the least tangible one. The cone of experiences is also arranging from
(more complex) the activities that require the use of all the senses to the activities that require
least use of the senses.
Which way is farthest away from the real world, in this sense, most abstract?
- The farthest and the most abstract are at the top of the cone which is the verbal symbols. It only
requires sense to this activity.
Is the basis of the arrangement of experiences difficulty of experience or amount of abstraction (the
amount of immediate sensory participation involved)?
- I think the cone of experience is arranged based on the difficulty and degree of abstraction.
Does the Cone of Experience design mean that all teaching and learning must move systematically from
base to pinnacle?
- I think the bands of experiences overlap and blend into one another they are interrelated to one
another especially when we think of the teaching and the learning process.
Can you overemphasize the amount of direct experience that is required to learn a new concept?
- In the real world weather you are old or young, we experience concrete or direct and abstract
experiences. This simply shows that we will provide a balance activity to the learners so they will
not be stuck on a certain level only.
How can you, as a future teacher, can use the Cone of Experience to maximize learning?
- Dale's cone of Experience provides teaching and learning models that allows teachers to
understand how to increase the retention rate of learners by involving the learner. This means that
while the learner participate and get involved in the learning process by expression, they awaken
the sensory organs. As a future educator, As a future educator, it is very important for me to learn
about Dales Cone of experience because this will serve as a tool to help us make decisions about
resources and activities. As dales cone of experience provides teaching and learning models that
allows educator to understand how to increase the retention rate of learners by involving the
learner. This means that while the learner participate and get involved in the learning process by
expression, they awaken their senses. I really think that Dale’s cone of experience is very
important to us, learners because we do remember or retain information if we ourselves do it and
the cone also contains strategies that can cater the needs of the learner. This cone of experience is
also very helpful in my studies especially that my course is secondary education major in math
and we really do need some concrete information that is why our solving problems allows us to
discover and demonstrate the information that we acquired and it is very helpful because it retains

in our minds longer. As future educators, we should consider Dale’s cone of experience in
delivering our lesson to the students because not all students have the same learning strategy and
I am pretty sure that not all of the students are fun of verbal symbols all the time. To retain the
students learning longer we must deliver our lessons using Dale’s cone of experience because it
can cater all the learning strategies of the students, you can catch their attention easily, they will
participate in your discussion and most of all they will retain the lessons longer.

APPLICATIONS
1. Think about your most unforgettable learning experience. How it was (or how was it not) a ―rich
experienced as defined by Dale?
- My most memorable learning experience is demonstrating teaching. It is rich experience for the
reason that I’ve learned the process of learning wherein I involved myself in learning or what we
called learning by doing. Demonstration teaching, teach me on how to be a future professional
teacher. I also learn how to cope up with the learning style of every learner had and what teaching
strategies are perfect to use on how to meet the satisfaction of every learner. In doing action-
learning you will become a critical creative thinker.
2. Dale thought a rich experience would be ―emotionally satisfying and―motivate [learners] to
read throughout their lives. Describe an experience you‘ve had that has been emotionally
satisfying and inspired you to continue learning throughout your life.
- The experience I’ve had that makes me emotionally rewarding and motivating is demonstration
teaching because of the action learning I’ve experience. This experience made me realize how
much I love my course especially the children that I will be handling soon. It made me also
realizes the importance of teaching for the reason that as a future teacher, I will build and mold
young minds. I will be one of their inspirations to fulfill their dreams.
3. How does this instructional tool increase Textbook information?
- The function of a textbook is essentially to guide the teaching and learning of the curriculum in a
particular subject. Against the backdrop of poor teacher context knowledge, textbooks play a
fundamental role in supplementing teachers' knowledge deficits.
