UNIT 1 – Introduction to Public Speaking

Discuss the following: (15 points each)

1. What makes someone an effective communicator? How will being an effective

communicator be valuable in your life?

An effective communicator is one who successfully expresses their message while also being
open to and responsive to the opinions of others. Effective communicators use simple,
straightforward language that is easy to understand. They are usually outspoken about their
views and opinions, but they are also receptive to others' recommendations. Effective
communicators maintain eye contact and use affirmative language such as "I hear you" or "I
understand your concerns" when listening.

Effective communicators share the following characteristics:

 actively contributes to their workplace

 trusted by others
 express themselves freely
 have their own style of communication
 can simplify complex subjects

Being an effective communicator can be valuable in your life since it facilitates and/or leads to
effective communication. When communication is effective, all parties involved feel content and
accomplished. There is no possibility for misunderstanding or change of messages when
messages are delivered properly, which reduces the risk of conflict. Effective communication is
critical in instances where conflict arises to guarantee that the situation is resolved in a
courteous manner.
2. Come up with examples of how variations in each of the four types of "environments"
can affect and alter meaning (e.g., How could the same words mean something
different in different environments?)

People are baffled because they may say one thing (a word, phrase, or sentence) to one person
and receive one reaction, while saying the same thing to another person and receiving a
completely different, or even opposite, reaction. Aren't words supposed to mean what they
mean?

Well, in fact, words may differ on meaning depending on the environment or context it is used.

Example of those are words or variations are the following:

PHYSICAL

DARK means as the absence of light in a place.

CURRENT refers to a body of water or air moving in a definite direction, especially through a
surrounding body of water or air in which there is less movement.

TEMPORAL

DARK means or characterized by tragedy, unhappiness, or unpleasantness.

CURRENT is referred to as belonging to the present time; happening or being used or done
now.

RELATIONAL

checking of inventory to make sure that all departments are following documented system of
recording transactions. It is a term widely used among or between accountants.

frequently used among or between programmers.

BENJAMINS is a word used in the USA; it is a slang which means a hundred dollar bill.
