LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH 8

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
a. Define propaganda technique and its kind
b. Share their experience in convincing someone to do something, to believe something or to
buy something
c. Analyze intention of words or expressions used in propaganda techniques
d. Present varied activities observing propaganda techniques

II. Subject Matter:

III. Procedure:

A. Preliminary Activities
 Greetings
 Prayers
 Classroom Management

B. Class Standards:
 Observe silence.
 Listen to the teacher or to someone who is speaking.
 Participate in the given activity.ws
 Raise your hand if you want to ask questions.
 Treat others with respect.

C. Preparation:
 Recall of the previous lesson
- Last time we had a discussion on examining biases made by the author whether it is
for or against.
- How did we define bias?
- Bias occurs when one displays a partiality for or prejudice against someone,
something or some idea

- A writer’s choice of words, selection of facts or examples, or tone of voice reveals
his or her biases.

Example:

Cats and dogs can both make good pets. Dogs can be affectionate, but they are extremely
difficult to care for. Cats, on the other hand, are also lovable, cuddly animals and they require
only moderate care that isn’t too time consuming.

 Processing Question:
- Which animal does the writer prefer?
- What made you say it is a cat?
- Very good. You have identified a bias.

D. Motivation
 ACTIVITY 1: SHARE IT! (Individual/Group Activity)
- Think for a time you convinced someone to do something or buy something or believe
something?
- Share your experience to your group mates. As a group select the best experience and
the leader will share it to the class.
 Processing Questions:
- Do you think you are good at convincing people?
- How do you convince them?

 Activity 2: Video Clip


- Kaya Nya, Kaya Mo (McDonald’s Advertisement)

 Processing Questions:
- What product is being advertised?
- Were you influenced or convinced with the advertisement you have just watched?
- Was your decision influenced by it?

E. Presentation
- Looking for facts to back up your choice is an excellent idea but find out who is
presenting those facts.
- Are they facts, or is the advertiser using propaganda technique to persuade you?
 Discussion Proper:
1. What is propaganda technique?

Propaganda
- Techniques used to influence opinions, emotions, attitudes or behavior
- Intended to make us accept or approve something without looking closely at the
evidence.
- Most propaganda techniques utilize emotion and avoid critical thinking

2. Who uses propaganda?


- Politics, Military, Advertisement, Us

3. What are the different types of propaganda technique?


- Examples are presented to the students.
A. Testimonial- the use of well-known, respected
people to endorse a product or service.

Example: Coco Martin is promoting a famous fast-food place Mang
Inasal! When his fans see this, they want to eat in it because their
favorite actor eats in it.

B. Bandwagon- Is influencing people by telling them how everyone is


using the same product or is true to the same ideology. This
encourages people to take the same course of action.
Example: Pepsi commercial that pushed forth the
slogan” The choice of the new generation.” Be proud
of the cool crowd. Don’t let get behind.

C. Name Calling- Use of names that evoke fear or hatred in the viewer.
This technique links a person or idea to a negative symbol.
Example: commie, fascist, pig, fat

D. Card stacking- showing the product’s best features, telling half-


truths and emitting or lying about the potential problems
Example: Cream silk conditioner can give hair a smooth
and silky appearance.

 Activity: Group Activity


- Grub master will choose 2 pictures inside the box. Discuss what kind of propaganda
was used in the advertisement.
A member explains the answer to the class.

F. Generalization:
 What is propaganda technique?
- Techniques used to influence opinions, emotions, attitudes or behavior
 Why should we be familiarized with the different kinds of propaganda?
- They help you in making your judgement as you are to be presented with lots of options
and choices in life

G. Application:
 Activity: Students do varied activities observing propaganda techniques.

H. Evaluation:
 Identify the propaganda technique being observed in each statement. Write the correct
answer.
A- Card Stacking

1. Marie notices that many of her friends have started eating a low-carb diet
and drinking protein shakes. Marie decides that this must be the healthy way
to eat, so she joins them.
2. Alden Richards promoting a brand of shampoo.
3. As your city mayor, I urge you to re-elect Mr. Diosdado in the next election.
My long experience in office tells me that he is your best choice.
4. Don’t be a misfit. Now you can fit with our Good Fit jeans. Everybody is
wearing them.
5. My opponent is a flip-flop man who cannot make up his decision. He
changes his mind with a breeze.

IV. Assignment
 From a magazine, cut out three examples of advertisement that observe propaganda
technique, then identify its kind.

V. Closure Activity
Exit card – write 5 big words that you have learned in the meta cards. Then post it in the
wall.
