III. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminary Activities
a. Greetings
Good morning, Grade 6!
b. Prayer
Before we begin the lesson this afternoon, let us ask the guidance of almighty God and
let us enlighten our mind to completely understand the lesson this morning. Would you
please lead the prayer?
c. Classroom Management
I would like to request everyone to arrange your chairs properly and make sure there
are no trashes around you.
d. Checking of Attendance
Are there any absents today?
I think everyone is present. I’m so glad that everyone understands the reasons of
coming to school regularly.
e. Drill
Mental Subtractions
1. 100 – 50
2. 120 – 70
3. 80 – 25
4. 158 – 128
5. 18 - 9
f. Review/Checking of Attendance
Bring your assignments and let`s check your assignment.
g. Motivation
Do you want Skyflakes?
Divide the class into 5 groups
I have here Skyflakes. You`re going to make fractions using Skyflakes. I will call
someone to write the fraction their group made using Skyflakes.
IV. PROCEDURES
a. Lesson Proper
Using the Skyflakes and the fractions the students made. The teacher will choose 2
students to present their fractions on the board. Using the 2 different fractions the students
made, the teacher will show how to subtract 2 similar fractions using the skyflake. The
teacher will call different students.

Do you know how to prepare dalandan juice?

Valuing: What are the effects of drinking dalandan juice to our health?
(Let pupils share their ideas)

1. I have here problem.

Sam spent ¹/₆ of his Sunday doing homework and ³/₆ of the day watching
educational shows. What part of the day was left to do other things?
2. Give the pupils some time to analyze the problem, then ask the class the
following guided questions:
a. What is asked?
b. How will you solve the problem?
c. What operation should be used?
d. What kind of fractions are 1/6 and 3/6?
e. How do we subtract fractions with the same denominator?
Let the pupils give their answers.
3. Show in the class the presentation of 1/6 and 3/6 using bar models. Explain
to the class. That if the denominator of two fractions is the same, then the fractions are
similar.
4. Explain that subtracting fractions is just like subtracting whole numbers. Give
them a couple of minutes to write the mathematical sentence and answer to the problem.
Have a pupil show his/her solution on the board and explain his/her answer. The answer
should be 2/6 or 1/3 cup of liquid. The teacher should note that the two fractions are
similar fractions because they have the same denominator.
5. Give more examples of similar fractions.
1. 4/7 - 2/7
2. 8/15 - 4/15
3. 5/11 - 4/11
4. 12/21 - 11/21
5. 5/8 - 1/8
6. Give examples of Dissimilar Fractions
1. ¼-½
2. 4/5 - 2/8
3. 7/9 - 1/3
4. 9/10 - 1/20
5. 4/5 - 1/10
7. Give examples of Mixed Numbers with same denominator.
1. 3 2/5 - 2 1/5
2. 4 3/10 - 3 7/10
3. 2 10/11 - 1 3/11
I have here another problem.
One day, Cindy spent 4 ½ hours studying math and Science. If she allotted 2 ¾
hours for Science, and the rest for math, how long did she study math on that day?

Give 2 more examples

1. 2¾ -3½
2. 3 5/8 - 1 ¾

b. APPLICATION
A. Find the difference of the following fractions.
1. 5/6 - 1/3
2. 5/7 – 1/4
3. 8 1/3 - 3 ¾
4. 4 1/5 - 3 3/10
5. 11/22 - 1/22

B. Solve the problem.

1. Emma likes chocolate. One day she bought chocolate and ate 5/8 of it in the
morning and 2/8 in the evening. How much part of the chocolate has she eaten?
c. GENERALIZATION
How do we subtract fractions and mixed numbers if the fractions are similar?
How do we subtract fractions and mixed numbers if the fractions are dissimilar?
V. EVALUATION
A. Find the sum of the following fractions.
1. 8/9 -2/9
2. 12 3/10 - 2 7/10
3. 4 2/5 - 3 4/8
4. 1/5 - 5/9
5. 10/23 - 1/23
