Mathematics
Quarter 3 – Module 8:
Solving Routine and Non-Routine
Problems in Real-Life Situations
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM] is prepared so that you, our dear

learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each pert shall guide you
step-by step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared
for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons

in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing
this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher's
assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of
each module, you need to answer the post-test to self- check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We
trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher

are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and
reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based
learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks
on any part of this SLM. use a separate sheet of paper in answering
the exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before
performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your
teacher or facilitator.

Thank You.

What I Need to Know

Good day learner! You have learned from the previous module
how to find the perimeter of triangles, squares, rectangles,
parallelograms, and trapezoids. This module is about solving
routine and non-routine problems. Routine problems use specific
steps and formulas needed to be solved. Non-routine problems use
open-ended steps and procedures required in the situation. I know
you will enjoy this module.

After going through this module, you are expected to solve

routine and non-routine problems involving perimeter of triangles,
squares, rectagles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. (M4ME-IIIi-52)

What I Know

Directions: Read the following problems. Draw the plane figure

with complete measures in the problem, then solve each. Write
your answer on a sheet of paper.

1. Jaden drew a picture of a store with a triangular roof. If the sides

of the roof measured 5 cm, 4 cm and 6 cm, find the
perimeter of the roof.

2. Innah is making a square table cloth. She puts a lace around it.
How many centimetres of lace did she use if the side of the table
cloth is 50 cm?

3. A basketball court measures 600 cm wide and 700 cm long. Find

the perimeter.

1
4. Nuelle walks around the rectangular park in his school every
morning. The park measures 42 m long and 35 m wide. How far
is the distance covered by Nuelle if he walks around the park
twice a day?

5. A flower garden is 11 m long. Its width is 4 m shorter than its

length. What is the distance around the garden?

Lesson
Solving Routine and
1 Non-Routine Problems

In this lesson, you are about to solve routine and non-routine

problems involving perimeters of triangle, square, rectangle,
parallelogram and trapezoid. You will use the formulas in finding
for the perimeters as well as the steps involved in solving
mathematical word problems.

What’s In

Do you remember how to find the perimeter of triangles,

squares, rectangles, parallelograms and trapezoids?

Directions: Find the perimeter of the following. Write your answer

on a sheet of paper.

18 cm
1. 2.
12 cm 7m 7m

6m

2
8 cm 10 cm
3. 4.

5.

What’s New

Are you helping to keep your classroom clean and organized?

In what way are you helping?

A.One side of a square working

table in Mrs Surio’s classroom
measures 55 cm. Find the perimeter
of the working table.

Read and analyze the problem.

1. How long is each side of the table?

2. How will you solve the problem?

3
What is It

To solve routine and non-routine word problem, you have to

follow several steps. Let us try this in the given problem.

Steps Answer

Understand:

What is asked? The perimeter of the table

55 cm is the length of one side
What is given? of the square table.

Plan:

What operation will you use? Addition or multiplication

What is the number sentence? 55+55+55+55 = n or 4 x 55 =

n

Solve:

What is the answer to the The perimeter of the table is

problem? 220 cm.

Check and Look Back:

Is my answer correct? Divide 220 cm by 4 to show

that each side of the square
table is 55 cm.

4
B. Using the given in letter A, if four tables are placed together end-
to-end,to make a big square table, what will be the perimeter of
the new table formed?

55 cm 55 cm

55 cm
55 cm
55 cm

55 cm 55 cm

55 cm

55 cm 55 cm

55 cm 55 cm
55 cm

55 cm

55 cm 55 cm

By adding the outer sides of the big square table, we have

55 + 55 + 55 + 55 + 55 + 55 + 55 + 55 = N.

From this, you can say that the perimeter of the big square
table formed is 440 cm.

5
C. Light posts are placed around a square park. There are 3 light
posts along each side of the park. If the distance between the
light post is 20 meters, what is the distance around the park?

Steps Answer

Understand:

What is asked? The distance around the park

What is given? 3 light post, 20 m distance

between the light post

Plan:

What operation will you use? Addition or multiplication

What is the number sentence? 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 +

20 + 20 = n or
20 m x 8 = n

Solve:

What is the answer to the The distance around square

problem? park is 160 m..

Check and Look Back:

Is my answer correct? Divide 160 m by 8 to show

that the distance of the light
post is 20 m.

6
Solution:
By drawing a picture
20 m 20 m

20 m
20 m

20 m
20 m

20 m 20 m

By adding the distances between the light posts

20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 160 m

By multiplying 20 m by 8
20 m x 8 = 160 m
Answer: The distance around square park is 160 m.

What’s More

Directions: Read each problem. Then, answer the questions that

follow. Do it on a sheet of paper.

A. Mr.Valdez plans to fence his vegetable garden. If his garden is

19 m long and 15 m wide. How many metres of fencing materials
will he need?

B. The three sides of a triangle measure 24 cm, 34 cm, and 52 cm.
What is the perimeter of the triangle?

What is asked? ______________________________________________

What are given? ______________________________________________
What is the process needed? __________________________________
What is the number sentence? ________________________________
What is the answer? __________________________________________

Directions: Read carefully, then solve the problem. Do it on a

sheet of paper.

C. Mika has a 14 cm by 10 cm picture. She wants to put it in a

picture frame but the picture must be 3 cm away from the edges
of the picture frame. What is the perimeter of the picture frame?

D. Find the perimeter of the trapezoid whose sides measures

75 cm and bases measures 45 cm and 50 cm.
