As a child I believed the plausible explanation that they form from one source toadstool dropping
spores in a ring, which forms a small ring of toadstools. Then they drop spores, but they only grow
on the fresh soil on the outside of the ring, so the radius of the circle grows.
Apparently this is not true and it is actually a single organism under the ground, which produces
visible caps in a ring on the surface.

The running theory, to my knowledge, is that the mycelium grows outward pretty uniformly, and
then as it gets big enough, the center grows old and dies, leaving just an outer ring that
continues to spread outward.
The center of the circle is where the first mushroom spore drops.
Same here in Sweden. We call them either häxring, or älvdans (fairy dance).

Go sleep in it.
The center of the circle is where the first mushroom spore drops. The mycelium grows under the
soil in an outwardly direction from the center, in a circular formation. As it grows it depletes the
soil that is is using for nutrients. Here you see the edge of the ring it has grown to — and the
fruiting bodies of the mycelium (the mushrooms) rise up out of the ground/soil below.

That's cool, thank you for answering.

Also the mushrooms are sort of like their reproductive organs. That’s where spores shoot out
of.

That's actually one organizm spanning the whole yard. Fungi is awesome!
Edit: Spelling
Growing up I would hear stories about how the fairies would make these at night.
