Matter

 anything that takes space

 can be natural (e.g. air and water) or made by people (car, book)

Mass – the amount of matter in an object

Volume – the amount of space something takes up
Property of matter – how matter looks, feels, smells, tastes or sounds. It can be smooth, rough, soft or
hard, thick or thin. It can be living or non-living

Types of Matter
 Solid
 Liquid
 Mass

Solid
 matter that has a shape of its own
 Properties: some bends, others tear, float in water, smooth, breakable
 How do we measure solid:
o Tape Measure, Meter Stick and Ruler – measures the length of the sold. Tells how long,
wide or high a solid is (millimiter and centimeter meter and kilometer)
o Balance – tells you how much mass something has
Liquid
 matter that takes the shape of the container it is in
 Without the container, the liquid will flow and will have no shape
 All liquid has mass
 Property: Think like milk or thick like honey
 How do we measure solid:
o Measuring cup – can measure liquid in millimiters or ounces

Gas
 spreads to fill the space it is in
 We cannot see the gases in the air but they are all around us

Measurement
 1,000 ML to 1 Liter

HEAT – ability to do work or cause change

Sources of heat
 Sun – main source of natural heat energy. It is a star and supports life on Earth
 Friction – makes you feel warm by rubbing against each other
 Electrical appliances – produces heat energy
 Burning materials – anything that burns and gives heat like charcoal, wood, paper, petroleum
What can heat energy do?
 Cook food
 Work and play
 Watch TV
 Enjoy plants
 Dry clothes
Effects of heat
 Changes temperature
 Change in shape and color
 Change the state of matter (melting, freezing, evaporating and freezing)

State of Matter
Melting – solid to liquid. Application of heat.
Evaporating – liquid to gas. Application of heat.
Freezing – liquid to solid. Removal of heat, Object solidifies
Condensing – gas to liquid. Removal of heat. Warm air cools down.
