Summary –

The poem is about Anton, a Dutch businessman who sold items such as pincushions and cloth. He was not
interested in his business and therefore the goods he sold gathered dust as he was engaged in scientific activities.

The central idea of the poem is all about science. When it is first developed seems crazy to those who are
interested only in what is immediately relevant to them. It is only the great innovators and geniuses, who can
continue to work despite the disapproval of those around them who actually advance our world.

Answer the following questions –

Question 1. What did Anton prefer to do rather than attend to his store?

Answer. Anton was more interested in grinding lenses for his microscopes than working in his store.

Question 2. Did Anton enjoy working at the store? How do you know?

Answer. I think he did not enjoy working in his store because he neglected his work. People used to wait in front
of his store and he did not attend to them. His goods just gathered dust while he was busy with his microscopes.

Question 3. Do you think people often don’t recognize a genius when they see one? Why?

Answer. No, generally people do not recognize genius when they see one. This is because geniuses are
extraordinary people who think and act in ways that are completely different from that of ordinary people. That is
why people often think that geniuses are mad.

Question 4. How do you think scientists discovered micro-organisms?

Answer. Microorganisms were discovered only after the invention of the microscope made it possible for them
to see what was previously invisible.
