Aims of the lesson:

1. to develop Ss’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills;


2. to introduce the new grammar structure;
3. to develop Ss’ ability to identify unreal and imaginary situations;
4. to develop Ss’ knowledge about the usage of the second type of conditionals;
5. to provide opportunity to use recently learnt material;
6. to produce and use explicitly the recently learnt material.

Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be better able to:
1) recognize the second conditional form;
2) use correctly the second conditional;
3) use appropriately the second conditional sentences

Materials: CD, laptop, textbooks, notebooks, worksheets, board


Skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing
Techniques: Exposing, conversation, explanation, reflection, elicitation, brainstorming

Anticipated problems:
- some Ss might not be eager to participate, thus they may need assistance;
- some Ss may have a lower English level and they may need extra indications to be given.

STAGES OF THE LESSON

1. Warm-up

Aim:
- to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere

Time: 3 minutes
Interaction: T - Ss, Ss -T
Procedure:
Teacher greets the Ss, asks them about their mood and the pupils answer. Teacher checks
the attendance.

2. Lead-in

Aim:
- to arouse the Ss’ interest in the subject;
- to develop Ss’ listening skills.

Time: 5 minutes
Interaction: T - Ss, Ss –T
Procedure:
Teacher asks Ss to listen to a song (Barenaked Ladies: If I had a Million Dollars). Ss
listen to the song. Teacher asks some questions: e.g. What would the singer of the song buy or
do if he had a million dollars? Ss answer the T.’s questions.

4. Presentation

Aim:
- to introduce the new grammar structure;
- to develop Ss’ ability to identify unreal and imaginary situations;
- to develop Ss’ knowledge about the usage of the second type of conditionals.
Time: 10 minutes
Interaction: T - Ss, Ss – T, Whole-class
Procedure:
T. writes the example If I were you I’d buy a mountain bike. on the board and checks the
meaning by asking Is it possible I can be you? The Ss answer No and the T. continues What
are we doing here? and the pupils answer We are imagining.
T. writes the title of the lesson and announces the aims of the lesson. Ss write down the
title of the lesson.

T. explains that the second conditional is used to talk about unreal or unlikely situations
or to give advice, writes this on the board and the Ss copy in their notebooks.

Ex a+b / page 78. Ss fill in the rules and answer the questions in pairs or small groups. T.
checks the answers with the whole class.

Answers:
a. Past
b. 1. It is possible I will have the money – we don’t know.
2. I haven’t got the money now, it is possible I will have it in the future but not very
likely.

5. Practice

Aim:
- to provide opportunity to use recently learnt material;
- to develop Ss’ ability to work in pairs.

Time: 15 minutes
Interaction: T - Ss, Ss – T, Pair work
Procedure:
Annex 1. T. tells the Ss that they are going to work in pairs to complete a worksheet with
second conditional in order to use recently learnt material. Ss listen to the T.’s explanations
and work in pairs to fill in the gaps. T. goes through the answers with the whole class. Ss read
lines for the class to hear and check.

6. Production

Aim:
- to produce and use explicitly the recently learnt material;
- to develop Ss’ speaking skills.

Time: 12 minutes
Interaction: T - Ss, Whole-class
Procedure:
Teacher tells the Ss that they are going to play a consequence chain story. Teacher asks a
student to start the game with a second conditional clause. (e.g.: If I had money, I would go to
England.) Another student continues: If I went to England, I would buy a present for my
mother. Ss give their answers and the T. appreciates their answers.
7. Feedback

Aims:
- to obtain feedback on individual Ss;
- to reward the Ss for their answers and for having participated actively in class.

Time: 3 minutes
Interaction: T - pupils, pupils - T
Procedure:
T. asks the Ss to tell her how they feel about the unit. T. asks if they can tell her what they
have learnt and which activity they liked the best. Ss answer individually.
T. praises the Ss for having participated actively in class and rewards them with positive
points in her register.

8. Homework assignment

Aim:
- to provide further practice of the vocabulary and the structure of the unit

Time: 2 minutes
Interaction: T - Ss
Procedure:
Ex. 3 / page 78. T. reads the instructions and explains the task. Ss write the homework in
their notebooks.
