INTRODUCTION

A. DESIGN DETAILS:
Construction of a Residential and commercial building is proposed at the site near Sanand,
Gujarat. Required laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate different soil properties and
three critical borehole were provided after site investigation work. Given below is the data on
the different cases of the structure and the load acting on it. Based on the given data,
different foundations have been designed for each case as required.

INTRODUCTION

B. SCOPE OF WORK:
The report covers analysis and design of different types of foundation, shallow or deep, as
required, for a structure under different loading conditions, as given in the problem
statement discussed in the next part. The design depends on the type of structure,
geotechnical parameters, variations in the soil strata and the loads acting on the structure. A
comparative study of the soil data from all five boreholes was done in order to select the
worst conditions of the soil strata.

C. THINGS TO BE CONSIDERED BEFORE DESIGNING A FOUNDATION:

a. To determine the basic properties of soil which affect the design and safety of
structure i.e., compressibility, strength and hydrological conditions.
b. To determine the extent and properties of the material to be used for
construction.
c. To determine the condition of groundwater & failure of existing works.
d. Specification and type, size and importance of the project.
e. Preparation of layout plan of the project.
f. Preparation of borehole layout plan which includes number and spacing of
boreholes, depth and frequency of sampling.
g. Selection of proper drilling and sampling equipment.
h. Preparation of guidelines for laboratory testing of collected samples.

PROBLEM STATEMENT 1

As Intermediate shear failure occurs so cohesion be,

C=21.6 kN / m 2 (For General shear failure)

C’=14.4 kN /m2 (For Local shear failure)

C”=20.6 kN / m 2 (For Mixed shear failure)

∅ °=29° (For General shear failure)

∅ °’=20.30° (For Local shear failure)

∅ °’’=27.69° (For Mixed shear failure)

For bearing capacity factors of Mixed shear failure, firstly we need to calculate factors for
general and local shear based on that mixed shear failure bearing capacity factors can be
calculated,

As OCR is less than 1, λ correction be taken as 1 (As per IS 8009 (part-1)-1976)

Therefore Sc1 × λ correction = 77.22×1 = 77.22 mm
