Good evening ! Welcome you to the seminar today. This seminar is one part of the USA
student exchange program .I’m going to talk about some special American customs
which most of you may find quiet strange and difficult to learn.Americans think it is a
good manner to be on time for an appointment .They appreciate the punctuality so that
you shouldn’t be late for appointments.
Americans have a saying :” Time is money “ Time has great value to Americans and
you may be considered very rude if you don’t arrive at the right time .Secondly ,
Americans are quite independent, they prefer being free and hate being disturbed by
other people. They like to have personal space and privacy .When speaking to
26
them, don’t stand too close to them or put arms around their shoulder, shaking hands are
more suitable. You can discuss with them some current events, but you’d better avoid
the topics which are causing a lot of angry public discussion. If you met somebody for
the first time , personal values, religion, money and politics are some topics you
shouldn’t talk about .Another American custom I admire most is that they wait for their
turns in the queues while queue-jumping is very popular in our country. When standing
in lines, they wait patiently and do not push the other people .The image of people
queuing in front of the shops is very common in America. In conclusion, it is necessary
for you to know American custom to avoid culture shock when staying and learning in
the US.

C. READING
Read the passage about Air pollution and find the answers to given questions that follow
AIR POLLUTION
We are nowadays becoming more aware of pollution matters that affect dramatically
our lives, especially there is growing concern about air pollution. There are some reasons that
lead to this kind of pollution. Firstly, the development of industrial zones, factories and
building construction areas is producing a large amount of dust and poisonous air. Especially
in the developing countries, people nearly pay their attention to the air treatment process that
makes the air pollution even worse. Secondly, because of the increasing urbanization, it can be
easily seen that there is always a lot of traffic in rush hour and dust on the road these days. The
smoke from vehicles and manufacturing exhaust increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the
air which makes us feel really hard to breathe. The consequences are very bad. Smog and dust
can do serious harm to our health and especially our lungs. We have thousands of asthma and
adult respiratory distress cases each year which raise concern about the air quality. Moreover,
acid rains are becoming more and more popular which damage crops and fields. Many people
believe that air pollution is also causing global warming and it is difficult to improve the air
without the efforts of all countries around the world.

Read the text and answer the questions by choosing the best answers
Hi! I am a robot from the year 2050. Today I will reveal some communication methods
in the future. It can be easily seen that social networking sites and social media are being
developed faster and faster nowadays. However, they will become out of date because
scientists will create a new method calling telepathic devices. These devices will help people
communicate brain to brain directly and non-verbally. People’s dream to be able to get in
touch without words and send text or audio messages by thought will finally become true in
2050. Telepathy is based on brain’s electrical activity. Although the first use is for military,
telepathy will be changing human’s life step by step. In addition, you will feel amazed when
you see the fully 3D images of subjects which are created by holographic technology. In 2050,
this technology really brings higher resolution and faster image presenting. The future’s
technology will also solve one more problem of human. It is difference in languages between
countries. People will be using instant translation device. It’s like a USB flash drive and it can
work offline. This device will help people who speak different language understand each other
directly and immediately.

C. READING
Read the passage and answer the following questions
MERCURY
Among eight planets in our Solar system, Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun
and it needs only 88 days to complete an orbit around the Sun. According to Greek
mythology, Mercury is the messenger of Gods (Hermes). Mercury is a small planer
which bears a strong resemblance to the Moon with the little larger size and rocky
surface and many bowl-shaped cavities. Because of its position in the Solar system,
the temperature on the sunny side of Mercury can reach over 800 degrees but -300
degrees is the other side’s temperature. Being cooler than ony Venus, the hosttest
planet, the climate on Mercury is extremely severe which makes it hard to visit and
explore. Two spacecrafts have sent to Mercury, the first was in 1974 and scientists
had to wait three decades to visit Mercury the second time in 2004. Some people
believe that there is no water in Mercury but some information collected from Radar
showed that ice exists on the Northern pole of this planet. Small Mercury has no
moons and no atmosphere because of its too little gravity (38% the gravity of Earth).
There is no report showing about life existence in Mercury yet.
