INTRODUCTION
The Location of this building is behind the Main Municipality building at Pulchowk, Lalitpur. The upcoming
block is located in the Flat terrain surrounded at all Five sides intermittently by Neighboring residential
buildings. The proposed Buildings have two sides surrounded by Neighboring building and remaining two
sites have no adjacent building near the basement excavation. Bore hole has been carried out at the building
footprint area. After analyzing the proposed building layout inside the existing topography, Two different
type of loadings has been identified and have been adopted to analyze the Soil and surcharge loading
conditions in order to evaluate the critical case in the proximity with the depth of excavation [basement -
6.6m] required for the upcoming building at that location. Considering this fact of basement excavation
requirement due to land Cost effectiveness, Protection works is required to be installed in place before
carrying out the excavation for the basement in order to retain the adjacent Soil mass, Public road and
neighboring property.
The Active Earth pressure is calculated using Coulomb’s theory. According to Coulomb’s theory, active earth
pressure is given by the following formula:
for:
for:
Basic rule for vertical strip loading q acting parallel with structure on the ground surface along an infinitely
long strip the trapezoidal increment of active earth pressure applied to the Protection Pile over a given
segment h is assumed – see figure below.
The general equation for determining the pressure at distance h below the ground line is
Point loads from a concrete Footing of adjacent building to Micropile is considered when the building is
adjacent to the excavation
We have used all the above mentioned formulae for Point loading during calculation of the surcharge load
on Micropile. The detail soil parameters assumed and input in the calculation and their graphical
interpretation of the result are attached in Annexure.
WORKING METHOD FOR BASEMENT PROTECTION SYSTEM INSTALALTION AND BASEMENT EXCAVATION
The Method of work execution should be as instructed below:
➢ After Installation of RCC bored pile as shown in the design drawings, RCC pile cap needs to be installed.
➢ Next is the Ist level of excavation from -2m from OGL needs to be carried out in stretch not more than 7~10m which should cover the installation of Ist laer of Soil anchor at
this level.
➢ Next stage, Installation of Top down wall to hold the scouring of soil as shown in design drawings.
7
Lalitpur Municipality Block, Lalitpur.

Calculation of Surcharge, Active Earth Pressure, Design of Cantilever Retention piles and Soil Anchors
➢ Repeat the above stages of excavation for next 7~10m stretch till we reach the bottom of exacavation from 2nd level of anchor to 4th level of anchor and top down wall
construction.
