Calculation of Surcharge, Active Earth Pressure, Design of Cantilever Retention piles and Soil Anchors

INTRODUCTION
The Location of this building is behind the Main Municipality building at Pulchowk, Lalitpur. The upcoming
block is located in the Flat terrain surrounded at all Five sides intermittently by Neighboring residential
buildings. The proposed Buildings have two sides surrounded by Neighboring building and remaining two
sites have no adjacent building near the basement excavation. Bore hole has been carried out at the building
footprint area. After analyzing the proposed building layout inside the existing topography, Two different
type of loadings has been identified and have been adopted to analyze the Soil and surcharge loading
conditions in order to evaluate the critical case in the proximity with the depth of excavation [basement -
6.6m] required for the upcoming building at that location. Considering this fact of basement excavation
requirement due to land Cost effectiveness, Protection works is required to be installed in place before
carrying out the excavation for the basement in order to retain the adjacent Soil mass, Public road and
neighboring property.

SCOPING OF THIS CALCULATION AND DESIGN

The building has Double storey basement floor with depth -7.05m including Mat thickness, PCC and gravel
bedding. Due to this scenario, it is required to calculate the surcharge load from the adjacent neighbor
building using Boussinesq equation and design of the protection system using the surcharge load and active
earth pressure to the protection system. After site reconnaissance, Two zone for the Protection system has
been identified [all around the building]. After surcharge calculation, two different Zones namely Zone 1 and
Zone [2+3] has been considered in the FEM Modal analysis for the design of Protection system using RCC
bored pile and soil anchor for support. Design drawings attached in Annexure. The retention piles location
and its layout has been assumed for practical space requirements for installation procedure minimizing the
space of the protection works. All of the calculation detail information were based on provided soil
investigation report and the provided site plan and information based on site. Consideration of Earthquake
forces has been taken into account during design and calculation of lateral earth pressure. The Span/
deflection ratio has been considered as L/90 to check the deflection of RCC bored piles. This is because
the protection system are considered to be temporary structures. The Design of Protection system is done
in two stages. In Ist stage, Calculation of Surcharge load, active earth pressure is calculated and then the
result obtained from Earth pressure calculation superimposed with surcharge pressure diagram to form
combined pressure diagram. In the IInd stage, FEM modal verification is carried out using stick model with
subgrade modules assigned to modal. Furthermore, the Phase FEM software has been used to calculate
the anchor length, diameter, its spacing and pull out force required to sustain the soil and surcharge pressure
for Zone 1 and Zone 2 within drift limit of L/90. The Subgrade modulus is calculated using the soil test report
data and then combined pressure is assigned to the FEM modal to obtain RCC design of Protection system.

This information is attached in Annexure of Report.

BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF CALCULATION OF THESE LOADS

ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE

The Active Earth pressure is calculated using Coulomb’s theory. According to Coulomb’s theory, active earth
pressure is given by the following formula:

where: σz - vertical geostatic stress

cef - effective cohesion of soil
Ka - coefficient of active earth pressure
Kae - coefficient of active earth pressure due to cohesion

The coefficient of active earth pressure Ka is given by:

The coefficient of active earth pressure Kac is given by:

CALCULATION SURCHARGE LAODS DUE TO ADJACENT BUILDINGS

Basic rule for vertical strip loading q acting parallel with structure on the ground surface along an infinitely
long strip the trapezoidal increment of active earth pressure applied to the Protection Pile over a given
segment h is assumed – see figure below.

Calculation of Surcharge, Active Earth Pressure, Design of Cantilever Retention piles and Soil Anchors

The general equation for determining the pressure at distance h below the ground line is

Point loads from a concrete Footing of adjacent building to Micropile is considered when the building is
adjacent to the excavation
We have used all the above mentioned formulae for Point loading during calculation of the surcharge load
on Micropile. The detail soil parameters assumed and input in the calculation and their graphical
interpretation of the result are attached in Annexure.

FORMULAE USED AND LOAD CALCULATION FOR ANALYSIS ARE AS FOLLOWS

• Active earth pressure calculation - Coulomb Theory of active Earth Pressure.
• Surcharge load Calculation- Boussinesq equation for Strip/Point load has been used for Calculation of
Surcharge.
• Embedment length of RCC bored pile has been checked as per IS2911 and Soil anchor has been employed
to make the retention pile within the drift limit from Phase modal verification..
• In the FEM model verification, the spring [lateral Subgrade modulus] for the soil is calculated from the IS2911.

SUMMARY OF OUTPUT OF CALCULATIONS

The Maximum Earth pressure located at 6.6m due to Active Earth for protection piles and Surcharge effect
at Zone-2 and at 7.05m due to Active Earth for protection piles and Surcharge effect at Zone-2. All the
pressure calculated has been shown summarized below in Tabular format.
