Module 1 : Week 1 : Third Quarter

UNDEFINED TERMS and SUBSETS OF A LINE

Learning Competencies

a. The learner represents point, line and plane using concrete and pictorial models.
Code: M7GE-IIIa-1
b. The learner illustrates subsets of a line.
Code: M7GE-IIIa-2

Objectives

a. The learner should be able to define the different the different undefined terms and
differentiate from one another.
b. The learner should be able to define, identify and name the subsets of a line.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Geometry comes from two Greek words geo and metron. Geo means earth and
metron means measure. Geometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with the study of
properties, measurement, relationships of point, line, plane, angles and other figures in space.

Line is an infinite set of points extending in opposite directions. It is represented by a

straight edge with arrows on both ends.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Undefined Terms

Description How to name? Examples

A point has no dimensions. It
has no length, width or - tip of a pen
• P
Point thickness, and it is represented
by a small dot. Named by a P or point P
- stars in the sky
single capital letter.
A line has one dimension. It
has infinite length but no width - hair strand
or thickness, and it is m
• •
Line represented by a two headed A B
arrow. It is named by either - edge of the
using two points on the line or ⃡𝐴𝐵 or line 𝑚 chalkboard
an italicized lower case letter.

T
A plane has two dimensions. It A
P
has infinite length and width but
no thickness, and it is H • - sheet of a paper
Plane represented by a flat surface. It M
Plane MAT or
is named by using three • - top of the table
noncollinear points on the Plane MTH or
plane, or a capital letter. Plane HAT or

𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐶 or ̅̅̅̅
𝐶𝐴
Subset of a line consisting of
two endpoints and all the ̅̅̅̅

̅̅̅̅
𝐶𝐷 or 𝐷𝐶̅̅̅̅
Subsets of a line consisting of 𝐴𝐷 𝐵𝐷
Ray an endpoint and the infinite
𝐶𝐷 𝐷𝐴
set of points on one direction
of the endpoint. It is named 𝐶𝐴 𝐵𝐴
using an arrow symbol and
two capital letters with the
endpoint written first followed
by another point on the ray.

Two rays with a common

endpoint and extending to 𝐵𝐷 𝐵𝐴
Opposite rays opposite directions.

Two rays with the same 𝐵𝐶 𝐵𝐷

Same ray endpoint and extending to the
same direction.

Subsets of a line also extend • ⁰CD

Half Line in one direction from a point •
which is not included. ⁰ • ⁰DB
