Tillage effects on soil quality and plant productivity in the
Swartland region, South Africa
Continuous and repeated application of synthetic agrochemicals
(fertilisers, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) can lead to
soil degradation and development of resistance to herbicides,
insecticides and fungicides. The future of sustainable crop
production lies in the reduction of synthetic agrochemical
applications. This study assesses the effect of reducing the
application of synthetic agrochemicals by substituting them
with environmentally friendly biochemicals, as well as using
infrequent tillage to incorporate soil amendments and for weed
control. Data from a long-term experiment (44 years) is evaluated.
It is concluded that incorporation of biochemicals and reduced
tillage could be beneficial for soil quality and crop productivity.

Insights into early winter Southern Indian Ocean dissolved

(GEOTRACES GIPr07 cruise)
This study presents the first dataset of dissolved iron and the
remineralisation proxy, barium excess, in the Southern Indian
Ocean during austral winter. Observations were conducted
along the 30°E line to collect data on the distributions and
internal cycling processes controlling the biologically crucial
micronutrient iron. Remineralisation proxies, namely apparent
oxygen utilisation and barium excess, were used to quantify the
fluxes and stocks of remineralised iron in intermediate waters.
Observations revealed a lack of a distinct seasonal cycle and
that remineralisation appears to be the dominant process driving
the distribution of iron in these waters during winter.

Representation of Albinism and persons with Albinism in
narratives from East and Southern Africa
This multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural study examined
representations of albinism and characters or subjects with
albinism in a selection of literary and cultural texts. Entirely
African-focused, it is the first deliberation to bring together
contemporary fiction (for children and adults), auto/biographical
and short documentary narratives set in, and from, East and
southern Africa to explore how issues of agency are represented.
The study argues that cultural texts are a crucial site where
public and private agency of subjects and characters with
albinism is (re)configured, various perceptions describing
persons with albinism and their condition are (de)constructed
and (re)conceptualised, and decisive ethical questions are raised.

This study highlights pertinent issues surrounding project
leadership and project complexity in an emerging economy.
By developing and applying a first-of-its-kind project leadership
role instrument, the study reveals that the fulfilment of project
leadership roles is integral to moderating the adverse effects of
project complexity on project success. In a critical contribution
to the area of project leadership, the study illuminates how
significant strengths and weaknesses of various leadership
styles moderate the success of complex construction
projects. Within the project setting, transformational and
ethical leadership minimises the adverse influence of project
complexity by creating conditions of trust, respect, empathy

Om van ʼn universiteit te gradueer is ʼn groot stap in enigeen se lewensreis. Sodra jy jou graad
verwerf het, vorm jy deel van die alumni-gemeenskap van jou universiteit en bly die Universit
eit Stellenbosch jou intellektuele tuiste. Die Alumni-kantoor streef daarna om alumni met hul
almal mater in verbinding te hou nog lank nadat die euforie van graadvang verby is.
