Blueprint of Nation Building in the 21st Century

1. Discipline - The need for discipline has always been a big problem for the Philippines.
We, Filipinos have the habit of questioning everything the government imposes on us. We may
be disciplined on other counties but we lack discipline on our own country. You will know just
by looking around. People ignoring the pedestrian lanes; jeepney drivers loading and
unloading in the middle of the road; children tossing their candy wrappers everywhere;
disregarding warning signs; and so many more scenes around describing how disciplined we
are. As Ferdinand E. Marcos once said, “Sa ikauunlad ng bayan, disiplina ang kailangan.” This
is the famous slogan from the Martial Law regime. One thing that the Philippines cannot deny
is the fact that during the dictatorship rule of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, the people in the country
were highly disciplined. Despite the terror brought by the dictatorship, the Philippines was
among the tiger economy nations in Asia that time. I am not saying that Martial Law is what
we need to create a disciplined society. Instead, it is the firm and responsible leadership of the
government combined with the citizens’ respect to the law and rights of their fellows. After the
Martial Law, the Philippines could not be happier to embrace democracy. Filipinos learned to
value liberty more—and this is actually good. However, everything too much is negative.
Without people realizing that democracy has limits, discipline would not be an easy thing to
spot in the community. Discipline, in this case, simply means abiding rules and regulation, the
process, and procedures.

2. Community - A sense of community is a call to serve the common good. Without the
vision of the common good, people will go on their own ways of dealing with everything they
are experiencing. Political leaders tend to remove all the good legacy of the previous
administration even it is for the greater good of the nation. Having a sense of community
means that people need to be selfless and understanding to what is happening around them
may it be the government, politics, societal problems, etc. Being selfless means that people
need to be willing to sacrifice for the greater good of the community. Being understanding,
on the other hand, means that filipinos need to weigh every needs and wants of the
government (job of the constituents) and the countrymen (job of the government).

3. Humility - One of the many problems of the Philippines is humility. Most of the filipinos are
feeling entitled. People high in entitlement believe that they should get what they want
because of who they are. Entitled individuals think they deserve more than other people. For
example, traffic enforcers letting go violators because this violator know someone from the
government that can jeopardizes the traffic enforcer’s job. So, the typical reaction of the
enforcer is to let go the violator because he/she cannot afford to lose a job. So, the violator is
one of the perfect examples of entitled person. That is not only where humility can be applied.
Humility is also the truth. Being humble enough that media will refrain from having misleading
headlines, and that government officials will love transparency. After all, humility is one of the
keys to equality. To build a humble nation, we need humble people. As Stephen Covey once
said, a humble person is more concerned about what is right than about being right, about
acting on good ideas than having good ideas, about embracing new truth than defending
outdated position, about building the team than exalting self, about recognizing contribution,
than being recognized for making it.

4. Patriotism - Patriotism is the feeling of love to one's country along with the feeling of unity
to those who feels the same. It is also defined as devoted love, support, and defense to one's
country. Patriotic people have shared motive to solve problems of the country for the greater
good. With patriotism, one believes that both the system of the government and the people
of their country are inherently good and work together for a better quality of life. Patriotism is
also the commitment of serving the greater good of all its people.

5. Dynamic - Being able to accept change is crucial in nation building because change
is the only constant thing in the world. Whatever is happening around us may not be
according to plan. Therefore, acceptance of change is very important. Acceptance is not
enough if you, yourself, cannot do change. Of course, whenever there is hindrance to the
plan, the reasonable thing to do is to change the plan to what is appropriate to the current
situation. Hence, we need to be dynamic in order for us to remain on track to have a better
nation.
