A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics III

March 17, 2021

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:

a. Identify symmetrical figures.

b. Draw lines of symmetry.
c. Manipulate given materials to create a symmetrical figure.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Symmetry in the Environment and in Design
B. References: MELCs Mathematics 3 M3GE-IIIg-7.3
Self Learning Module
Learners’ Material in Mathematics 3 pp. 267,

C. Materials: Laptop, cartolina, marker,

cut-out shapes, cut-out
letters, printable templates.

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities:

1. Drill:

"Mystery Box"
One pupil will pick an object inside the box, without pulling out the object he/she will try
to guess the object and give its shape.

3. Motivation:
Present a picture of a butterfly. Ask pupils to describe the butterfly. Fold the
butterfly into two. Ask pupils what they see. Ask the pupils if the butterfly is equally
divided into two.

B. Modeling

Introduce the word "Symmetry" and the "Line of Symmetry"

Explain that symmetry is when a figure has two sides that are mirror image of
one another. Tell them that you can draw a line through a picture of the object and
along either side the image would look exactly the same. Explain that this line would be
called “Line of symmetry." Present other pictures or objects. Have the pupils
visualized and identify if the given design of the picture or object is symmetrical or not.
Give examples of things that look symmetrical that they find in nature, in school
and outside.
Tell the pupils that they can check if a shape has line of symmetry by folding it.
When the folded parts match perfectly with one another, then the fold line is a line of
symmetry.

C.Guided Practice:

Game: Like or Unlike

D. Independent Practice

D.1 Group Activity

Group 1. Give pictures that are either symmetrical or not symmetrical. Let children
observe the pictures or objects. Let them discuss if the pictures are symmetrical or not
symmetrical.
Direction: Write Symmetrical or Not Symmetrical after each object and
explain your answer.

Name of Object Symmetrical or Not Explain

Symmetrical

Group 2. Make 2 cut out object in cartolina that shows symmetry

Group 3. Use the grid lines to mirror the given image.

E. Closure
What is symmetry? How do we know that a figure or object or shape is symmetrical?
In what way do we use the symmetry?

IV. Evaluation

V. Assignment
