What is a Universal Testing Machine?

Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is named as such because it is a great multi-purpose instrument that
can perform many different varieties of tests on an equally diverse range of materials, components, and
structures. A sample is shown with its primary parts labeled.

SAMPLE MODEL (WEW 600D MODEL) OF A UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE

What are the Tests Performed on the UTM?

The main function of UTM is to test the mechanical properties of materials. Such tests are as follows:

1. Tensile Strength Test – usually for wood, steel and metals to determine their yield strengths
2. Compression Strength Test – to determine the resistance of a material to the crushing effect of
an axial load
3. Bending Strength Test – to determine the flexural strength of a material
4. Shearing Strength Test – to determine the resistance of a material to shearing
5. Adhesion Tests (Peel test) – to determine the strength of adhesives

What are the Materials that can be Tested?
1. Tensile Strength Test – wood, steel, concrete
2. Compression Strength Test – wood, concrete, concrete masonry units
3. Bending Strength Test – wood, concrete, steel, other composite materials
4. Shearing Strength Test – wood
5. Adhesion Tests (Peel test) – any product using adhesives like shoes, wood and wood by-products

Parts and Functions of a UTM

MORE DETAILED PRESENTATION OF THE UTM

PARTS FUNCTIONS
1 Upper Crosshead • Fixed topmost part of the UTM
2 Upper Grip • Used to grip the upper end of the specimen
3 Screw • Used to adjust the position of the lower crosshead
4 Lower Grip • Used to grip the lower end of the sample
• Together with the lower crosshead, it moves downward during
tensile and peel/adhesive test
5 Column • Supports the test frame
6 Lower Crosshead • Lower head of the UTM and is one of the important parts
• Has upward and downward movement
7 Compression Plate • It is where compression and bending tests take place
8 Working Table • Platform for the compression and bending test fixtures
9 Cylinder • Can be seen when the metal sheet is removed
• Test loading system
10 Metal Sheet • Covers the internal parts of the UTM
11 Baseplate • Supports the whole UTM
12 Grip Control System • Controls the upper and lower grips

13 CPU • Brain of the computer where most calculations take place
14 Computer Monitor • Output device that displays information
15 Printer • Used to print the results of the test conducted
16 Power Switch • Used to turn on the machine by rotating the switch clockwise
17 Emergency Stop • A fail-safe control switch that provides both safety for the
machinery and for the person using the machinery
• Used to stop the machinery quickly when there is a risk of injury
or the workflow requires stopping
18 Digital Controller • Used to ensure that the specified test rate is accurately
maintained throughout the test

Note: The Model Shown above is just a sample. There will be slight modifications on other models and
brands of UTM.

VI. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

VII. EVALUATION (Note: Not to be included in the student’s copy of the IM)

VIII. ASSIGNMENT

Assignment #CMT-5: PARTS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE

1. Select from choices in the box the parts involved when performing the following tests:
Example: Shearing – Screw, Lower Crosshead, Working Table
a. Tensile - _____________________________________________________________________
b. Compression - ________________________________________________________________
c. Bending - ____________________________________________________________________

Upper Crosshead Lower Crosshead

Upper Grip Compression Plate
Screw Working Table
Lower Grip Grip Control System

2. Assuming the computer and the printer are turned on, what will be the next step to do when trying to
perform a test?
3. What part of the UTM will you use to remove the tensile test specimen from the grips?
4. In what direction does the lower crosshead move during a tensile test?
5. In what direction does the lower crosshead move during a compression test?
6. In what direction does the lower crosshead move during a bending test?
