Introduction

With the increasing number of housing typologies under the PMAY Awas Yojna 2017 Gramin Scheme, the aspect about
the sensitivity of the context of the place is blur and lost. The entire objective of understanding the community and
place is to bring back the ritual and cultural values relating to the current vernacular houses back to the new houses to
be created under the banner of PMAY Yojna. For this purpose a community is identified in the Konkan region of
Maharashtra named Bhuvarwadi, Parchuri

The premise will majorly deal with comparing the existing PMAY houses and the vernacular houses in Bhuvarwadi,
Parchuri to create a Housing construction guidelines which is sensitive to the context, rituals, customs, values & place
based on the following criteria’s:

1. Foundation
2. Plinth
3. Flooring
4. Wall Masonry
5. Wall finish`
6. Roofing
Keeping this broader objective in mind, students are looking at a program responding to the Skilled and Unskilled
persons required for the construction of the said houses, where a space dedicated to rediscover skill sets of the
communities in Konkan particularly in the selected area of Bhuvarwadi as a case, a research centre where a
collection of local material palette and vernacular or lost techniques is being taught, thus bringing awareness and
being sensitive of the context and the community.
