LEARNING TASK

First Law of Thermodynamics and Calorimetry (Written Work 1)

TASK SUMMARY

Directions: Read and analyze the given problems. Write the given and complete solution.
Don’t forget to necessary units in your solution.
Given – 1 point
Complete Solution - 2 points
Final Answer – 2 points

1. What is the work done (in kJ) by a system when it absorbs 106 J of heat and gain 67 J
of energy? Determine if it is exothermic or endothermic.

2. How much heat is released by a system when 213 J of work is done on it to decrease
its energy to 78 J? Is it exothermic or endothermic?

3. Calculate the change in energy (in kJ) if a gas absorbs 56J of heat as it does 112 J of
work by expanding.

4. How much heat (in kJ) is absorbed by liquid water that weighs 630 grams as it is
heated from 45°C to 105°C?

5. How much heat (kJ) is released by a 200-gram piece of silver as it cools from 1023°C
to 300°C?

6. The heat of dissolution of a solid substance was determined using an insulated

calorimeter containing 180 grams of water initially at 27.8°C. If the temperature of the
water increased to 36.5°C, what is the heat (in J) of dissolution of the solid?

The sign rules for heat and work are set as follows:
 receives heat, Q +
 releases heat, Q -
 does work, W -
 accepts work, W +

Item Given Complete solution Final

no. Answer
1
Q = 106 J ΔE = Q + W
ΔE = 67 J
W = ΔE – Q -39 J
Unknown: W- = ? W = 67J – 106j (Exothermic)
W = -39 J (Exothermic)

Negative value of W because work done by the

system.

2
W = 213 J ΔE = Q + W
ΔE = 78 J
Q = ΔE + W -135 J
Unknown: Q - = ? Q = 78J – 213J (Exothermic)
Q = -135 J (Exothermic)

Since the work was done by the system, the W has a

negative sign and equals to -213J.

3
Q = 56 J ΔE = Q + W
W = 112 J ΔE = 56J + (-112J)
ΔE = -56 J -56 J
Unknown:
ΔE = ?

Mass = 630 g Q = mc∆T / Q = mc (T2 – T1)

C is the specific heat and for water, it is 4.18 J/g°C
T1 = 45°C 158, 004 J
Q = 630 g × 4.18 J/g°C ׿ 105 – 45) °C
T2 = 105°C
Q = 630 × 4.18 ×60
Q = 158, 004 J
Unknown: Q+ = ?

5
Mass of piece of To calculate : Amount of heat released (in kJ)
silver (m) = 200 g Q = mc∆T

Initial c is the specific heat of silver which is 0.23 J/g°C

temperature (T1)
= 1023°C ∆T = T2-T1

Final temperature Q = 200g × 0.23 J/(g°C) × (300-1023)°C -33.26 kJ

(T2) = 300°C
= - 33258 J
Unknown: Q- =?
Convert into KJ

-33258 J × (1.00kJ/1000J)
= -33.258 kJ

Q = -33.26 kJ

Negative sign here indicates that heat is released

here.

Hence, -33.26 kJ of heat is released.

6 Mass = 180 grams
T1 = 27.8°C ΔT = 36.5°C - 27.8°C
T2 = 36.5°C = 8.7 °C

Unknown: kj/mol
Heat (in J) of Heat Dissolution = 180 grams × 8.7 °C
dissolution of the = 1, 556 kj/mol
