Erich Fromm: Humanistic & Existential view of the self

Erich Fromm is a social psychologist, psychoanalyst, sociologist, humanistic

philosopher, and democratic socialist. He was born on March 23, 1900, in Frankfurt,
Germany, and was the only child of a middle-class Orthodox Jewish couple. The works
of Fromm obtained him a good credit or reputation beyond the psychology and the view
of himself.

The theory of Fromm said that modern technology and humans, separate us or
put us away from the real world. We (Gen Z.) lived where new technology is present, for
us it easier, more convenient and faster so that it didn’t gave us any hassle and it is
because of the new technology, we’re most likely to forget on how to communicate
verbally or because of the virtual or social world. The people in Gen Z. are more likely to
be comfortable in communicating thru social media network. Technology was invented
to help us human beings to make our life easy and it is entertaining for us and it is
invented not just destroy the connection between human-to-human interaction.
Technology was made to produce good quality goods and other services that we need
as a Human being and is very convenient and easy to use. Example, the computers and
the cellular phones or smart phones that we have today, it is helping us in our
productivity or in doing our school works. Well, for me, it depends on the person on how
they will use the technology.

To conclude, I think we should find a better way to communicate to the real world
rather than focusing more on the virtual world. We need to communicate physically and
lessen in virtual because it is for our betterment. Communicating physically or socially
with the person around you is more valuable rather than communicating with them
through chats, messages, calls, videocalls, and etc.
Erik Erikson: Psychological stages of personality development

Erik Erikson is a developmental psychologist and a psychoanalyst known for his

theory on psychological development of human beings. Erik Erikson did suggest that
the developmental process will be ruled or headed on a step by step changes in
ascended process. He was known for his theory.

After watching the live discussion, There are eight stages in theory of
development and these are trust vs mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative
vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity formation vs. identity confusion, intimacy vs.
isolation, generativity vs. isolation and lastly the Integrity vs. despair. In this
development theory, Erik Erikson wants us to have a knowledge on why we have some
kind of those characteristics that we did not know and to where those characteristics are
coming from. Erik Erikson’s theory helps us understand that while we are in the process
of developing.

Adolescence is the period where skepticism or confusion is present and

unsettlement. As we develop, there are many changes that was happening in our body
and our mind is evolving. This stage is where you are finding yourself or who you really
are and what you really are. This stage can help us or teach us on how to improve our
character as we are experiencing many things as we are in adulthood.

There are many doubts you can face growing up but never think of that doubt
because it will make confusions on your mind. Be positive in life so that you can avoid
thinking of confusion or negativities. We will be successful someday.
Carl Rogers: Theory of the Self

Carl Rogers is an American psychologist and is one of the founders of the

humanistic approach to psychology. The client-centered approach is his way to
understand the personality of his client. Carl Roger’s theory is helping the people to
achieve on what you want to be in the present time and to be a better person and to
achieve the feeling of satisfaction to themselves.

Growing up, I am facing a lot of personal problem that is because there were
some confusion on my mind, sometimes I am like this and sometimes I am like that. I
didn't know what to do. I am asking myself sometimes if I am good or bad. Am I doing
good just because I want the people around me to be happy but in reality I am not the
one who’s not happy. I have personal issues about myself.

Carl Rogers' theory helped me realize that I don't need to show things that I
think they will get satisfaction or happiness thus let them realize who really am I. I don't
need to show off some fake attitude for them to like me but rather I need to focus on
myself because I know being true will help me grow. Being true gives me a boost of
confidence and satisfaction.

I am always putting this in my mind that I am letting the people accept me for
being me and for loving me of being true to myself. Real people will appreciate us even
we have issues. I just decline other people's opinion about me thus I am focusing on
myself more and improving it. Don’t be affected on what they will say about you thus
take it as a motivation and that will improve yourself and it has a big impact on how you
think on your mindset.
How I understand myself better

There are many lessons that we can get after understanding the discussion that
Ms. Dayag discussed. There’s a lot of knowledge that we could get about the theories
from Erich Fromm, Erik Erikson and Carl Rogers. There are some things in the theories
that you can apply in your daily life. This is my presentation on How I understand myself
better in every theory.

In the Humanistic and Existential view of the self by Erich Fromm, I understand
that everyone is relying on their gadgets because they are entertained to use it 24/7.
Even me, I am guilty because I am using my smart phone to play games and to check
anything in social media. So, after listening to the discussion, I realized that we must
lessen the usage of gadgets so that we can communicate face-to-face with the people
that surrounds us. I realized that communicating socially is not that good as
communicating personally because when there’s a human-to-human interaction, we can
build up a good and happy memories that can last forever. But, in some instances we
can use our gadgets to communicate with our loved one’s when they were not around
or they are somewhere far from us.

In the Psychosocial stage of personality development by Erik Erikson, I can see

my self in the 5th stage the identity formation vs. identity confusion, because there are
many confusions that I faced in my life. Maybe this will help me to set my goals to
become successful someday. It will help us build a good mind set to continue on the
thing that we are doing. We cannot predict our future so we can work hard for it and we
will become what we want to be. Just always believe in yourself and never give up
because giving up is for the weak. There is nothing to lose if we will keep on trying
things for us to be successful and somewhat contented. We must give our best on
everything and through everything we do, we need to put God at the center. God will
provide on what we need.

In the Theory of the self by Carl Rogers, I realized that you need to be true to yourself
and do everything what makes you happy. I don't need to show things that I think they
will get satisfaction or happiness thus let them realize who really am I. I don't need to
show off some fake attitude for them to like me but rather I need to focus on myself
because I know being true will help me grow. Being true gives me a boost of confidence
and satisfaction. Love yourself first before loving others.
