Drawing Basic tools

Select tool (Spacebar)

Specifies what entities you want to modify with SketchUp’s other tools or commands.

Line tool (L)

Used to create lines or edges. Edges form the structural foundation of all models.

NOTE: The Measurements box also accepts 3D coordinates for lines:

o Absolute coordinate
- places the end of the line relative to the current axes.
Format: [ x, y, z ]

o A relative coordinate
- places the end of the line relative to the starting point of your line.
Format: < x, y, z >

Eraser tool (E)

This tool Erases lines or edges.

Rectangle tool (R)

This tool creates rectangle or square planes.

Circle tool (C)

This tool is used to create circular planes.
NOTE: Use CTRL ‘+’ and CTRL ‘-‘ to change the number of segments. Default is 24.

Polygon tool
In SketchUp, a polygon has a radius and 3 or more sides. The size of polygon is measured
from a center point, and the number of sides determines the type of polygon you draw.

NOTE: Use CTRL ‘+’ and CTRL ‘-‘ to change the number of segments.

Arc tool
Used to create an arc or circle in SketchUp. You can choose from a few different arc tools:
2 Point Arc tool: With this tool, click to set two points and
then drag out a bulge to create the arc.
Arc tool: With this tool, you set a center point. A protractor
appears to help you set the starting and ending of the arc
based on your desired angle. This tool creates an open arc.
Pie tool: This tool works just like the Arc tool, but creates a
closed shape that becomes a face.
3 Point Arc tool: This tool enables you to draw an open arc
based on a pivot point.

SketchUp features an inference engine that allows you to

work in three dimensions.

When the Line tool cursor is hovering above the midpoint

of another line, for example, the inference engine displays
a light blue dot and a ScreenTip that says "Midpoint." Every
inference has its own color and ScreenTip.

A. Point inference
- is based on the exact point of your cursor in your model.

Point Inference Type What It Looks Like What It Means

Component Origin The axis origin points within a component and the

Endpoint End of a line, arc, or arc segment

Midpoint Middle point on a line, edge, or arc segment

Arc Midpoint Middle point on an arc

Intersection Point where a line intersects another line or face

On Face A point that lies on a face

On Edge A point that lies on an edge

Center Center of a circle, arc, or polygon

Guide Point A guide point

NOTE: All these point inference types are magenta in color when the geometry is inside a group or
component.

B. Linear inference
- gives you the ability to extend an imaginary line originating from a Point Inference. Sometimes it
displays a temporary dotted line while you draw.

C. Shape inferences
- help you pinpoint the moment when a rectangle becomes a square, for example.

found in mathematics and the arts

Half Circle, Quarter

An arc that is exactly one half of a circle, one quarter circle,
Circle, or Three-
or three-quarters of a circle, respectively.
Quarter Circle
An arc shows edge and center inferences when a drawing
Arc Side and Center
tool hovers on the arc.

Circle/Polygon A circle shows and center inferences when a drawing tool

Center hovers on the circle edge.
